Sigibodo II of Lichtenberg , also Siegbodo , was Bishop of Speyer from 1302 to 1314.

Live and act

He came from the Alsatian noble family Lichtenberg whose eponymous seat was Burg Lichtenberg and was born as the son of Ludwig II. Von Lichtenberg and Elisabeth von Baden, daughter of Margrave Hermann V of Baden .

As early as October 2, 1289, he appeared in a document as the Speyer canon and provost of the St. Guido monastery . In 1296 he appears as vicar general of Bishop Friedrich von Bolanden .

After the death of Bishop Friedrich, the smoldering disputes between the bishop and the city continued, despite the mediation of the Mainz bishop Gerhard II von Eppstein . Sigibodo von Lichtenberg, a partisan of King Albrecht , was elected as his successor. However, he had to assure the Speyer clergy in Deidesheim Castle in an election surrender that the concessions to the city would be reversed. In addition, a force of 60 mounted mercenaries was set up to fight against the citizens. The city refused entry and homage to the new bishop and forbade the sale of wine and interest payments to clergy. As a result, there were armed conflicts for over seven months and the area around Speyer and the courtyards of the church were devastated. On October 4, 1302, the warring parties concluded a treaty in which almost all of the citizens' demands were met. The ban on serving wine by clergy remained. This left the bishops only with the rights they had already negotiated with Bishop Friedrich in 1294. Their sphere of influence was limited to the area of cathedral immunity , which is why it was also called cathedral city. There were thus two independent political domains within the city walls.

The prince-bishop's coat of arms is usually quartered . The fields of the coat of arms alternate with the family coat of arms of the von Lichtenberg family and the coat of arms of the diocese of Speyer, a silver cross on a blue background. The family coat of arms of the von Lichtenberg family is an upright striding black lion on a silver background with a red frame.
