action

Esther, an elderly lady with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , has decided, with the consent of her family, to end her life with the help of pills. Before that, she would like to spend another weekend with all her loved ones: the older daughter Heidi with husband Michael and son Jonathan, the younger daughter Sanne with boyfriend Dennis and Esther's lifelong girlfriend Lisbeth appear in the parents' house. Esther would like to celebrate an early Christmas with the guests before her husband Poul, a former doctor, is supposed to give her the fatal dose after the guests have left on Sunday evening.

While Heidi initially unreservedly supports her mother's plans, the mentally unstable Sanne finds it difficult to deal with the situation. Her relationship with Dennis, who openly lives out his drug use, has fluctuated for years between separation and renewed reconciliation. Finally, Sanne announces that she will call an ambulance as soon as her mother has taken the pills. When Heidi hears about it from Dennis, she tries to dissuade her sister from doing this.

On Sunday night, Heidi happened to see Poul and Lisbeth kissing. Suddenly she doubts that her father can still properly assess the situation. In the morning she reveals her observation to Sanne. Since Esther has always insisted that the family must agree on her planned death, the sisters decide to withdraw from the agreement. You confront Esther with this decision, but she says it is too late. The angry Heidi then calls an ambulance. When Poul confronts her about it, she confronts him with her nightly observation. He and Esther then reveal that his relationship with Lisbeth goes back to Esther's express wish so that both of them do not become lonely after her death. Since Heidi only said on the phone that someone in the house had taken sleeping pills, Sanne, who was taking psychotropic drugs, decided to go with the ambulance. Dennis accompanies them; the other guests say goodbye to Esther and Poul and leave the house. Then Poul gives his wife the tablets.
