Skast (German Schads , Danish formerly Skads , 1292 Skastæth ) is a parish municipality (Danish Sogn ) in North Schleswig , Denmark . It is located northwest of the city of Tondern not far from the coast of the North Sea . Until 1970 it belonged to Harde Tønder, Højer og Lø Herred in what was then Tønder Amt , then to Bredebro Kommune in what was then Sønderjyllands Amt , which was merged into the "new" Tønder Kommune in the Syddanmark region as part of the local government reform on January 1, 2007 . To distinguish from a 70 km further north Jutland town is sometimes the community in Danish Sønder Skast called (special = Southshore).

Municipal area

Like its neighboring communities Randerup and Hjerpsted, Skast is one of the smallest in western North Schleswig . The area is 11.6 square kilometers, the population (January 1, 2020) 106, with the church village being the only village settlement.

The western and larger part of the municipality lies on the Hjerpsteder Geestrücken and forms its northeastern end. The eastern part consists of moorland in the lowland of the Seiersbek. The highest point in the landscape, called Landhøj , in the southwest of the municipality is only 14 meters high.

Neighboring communities are Ballum Sogn in the west, Randerup Sogn in the north, Brede Sogn in the east and Emmerlev Sogn ( German : Emmerleff ) in the south .

history

No prehistoric monuments were found in the community. In the Middle Ages, Skast was part of the Lo harde judicial and administrative district . In the 13th century, the bishop , cathedral chapter and hospital in Ribe acquired numerous properties here. After the Reformation they came to the now secularized Trøjborg Manor . Until 1864, most of the community did not belong to the Duchy of Schleswig , but to the Kingdom of Denmark . A smaller part, however, remained with the Duchy of Schleswig and belonged to the Office of Tondern . The German-Danish War of 1864 resulted in the entire parish becoming part of the Kingdom of Prussia . It formed an independent and undivided rural community in the Tondern district , which was also subordinated to the Ballum district from 1889 . After the First World War , a referendum took place in North and Central Schleswig on whether or not to belong to Germany or Denmark . Almost all residents of the community voted in Danish. From June 1920 made Skast a parish community in the newly designed office Tønder until in the municipal reform in 1970 in the metropoloitan Bredebro opened.

traffic

The roads are only of local importance. The community has never had a railway connection. The next train station is seven kilometers east in Bredebro , where the northern extension of the Green Coastal Road as the A 11 is the most important north-south connection in the region.

Attractions

Despite the small size of the parish, Skast has a rather stately Romanesque church, which was built mainly from Rhenish tuff . Mighty granite blocks serve as the foundation . Individual components are made of bricks in monastery format. The building shows the complete regional division into apse, choir, nave and tower. The gable tower with a gable roof was added in Gothic times. The altar from the 17th century contains parts of a previous one from the 14th century.
