Sleeping Beauty is an Australian film drama by Julia Leigh from the year 2011 .

The student Lucy keeps her head above water with various part-time jobs. She takes part in laboratory tests, works as a waitress, office assistant and prostitute. Your life is marked by indifference, lack of perspective and emotional dullness. She can only open up a little to her only friend, the reserved Birdmann . Via a newspaper ad, she comes across a mysterious, exclusive club where women in lingerie serve older, decadent gentlemen at dinner parties. Lured by rich rewards and curiosity, she agrees. Clara, the boss of the club, is taken with Lucy and makes her go further.

Stunned by a drug, Lucy leaves her defenseless body to the sexual fantasies of individual club members, who are guaranteed absolute discretion. The only requirement is that sexual intercourse does not occur. Lucy is soon tormented by the question of what will happen to her while she is unconscious. She secretly records one of the sessions with a mini camera, but it remains untouched in this one. A suicidal man let Clara poison him through an overdose of sleeping pills and died lying in bed next to Lucy. When Clara brings Lucy out of a deep swoon, she notices the dead person next to her, screams her horror and grief and thus awakens in an ambiguous sense.

The title of the film is the English name of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty by the Brothers Grimm . Similar motifs as in Sleeping Beauty already existed in the novel Memory of My Sad Whores by Gabriel García Márquez , in the book The Sleeping Beauties by Yasunari Kawabata and in its film adaptation The House of Sleeping Beauties by Vadim Glowna . The screenplay by the Australian writer and screenwriter Julia Leigh made it onto the so-called Black List of the then leading universal producer Franklin Leonard in 2008 ; a list of favorite scripts from around 250 executive producers from the film industry that have not yet been filmed . With the help of Jane Campion , the project finally succeeded. Sleeping Beauty premiered on May 11, 2011 at the Cannes Film Festival as an official participant in the competition. In Germany it was seen for the first time on October 5th of the same year at the Hamburg Film Festival .

The German-speaking critics noticed the “disturbing passivity” of the main character Lucy, her “self-destructive concept of life”.
