Space Hulk is a board game released in 1989 by the British company Games Workshop . The storyline of the game is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

The game consists of a variable playing field, which is made up of individual cardboard elements of different lengths and widths. The parts of the playing field can be connected like pieces of a puzzle and represent corridors and rooms of an abandoned spaceship. How this playing field is set up can be found in the mission book, or self-compiled missions, as can be found on the Internet in corresponding communities. The playing field is the "Space Hulk", a huge spaceship wreck in the depths of the universe.

One player takes on the role of the imperial Space Marines , another takes on the role of the opposing symbionts (English: Genestealers ) of the Tyranids .

The aim of the game is to destroy the respective opponent or to fulfill a certain objective.

Extensions and versions

In Games Workshop three extensions appeared: Deathwing (1990), Genestealer (1990) Campaigns (1991).

The basic game of the first edition was also published in German in 1993 in cooperation with Welt der Spiele .

In 1996 the second edition was published by Games Workshop in English and German.

The limited third edition Space Hulk has been available for pre-order in Germany since August 17, 2009 . The third edition was also published in German and was sold out shortly after publication.

The fourth edition was published in 2014, so far only in English.

Awards

Space Hulk received the Origins Award for Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Boardgame in 1989 . The second expansion, Genestealer , won the same award the following year.

Adaptations

In 1993 Electronic Arts published the first adaptation of the board game as a computer game for MS-DOS, PC-98 and Amiga with its title Space Hulk . In 1995 the further developed Space Hulk followed: Vengeance of the Blood Angels (also called Space Hulk 2; abbreviation of the subtitle: VotBA) for PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and 3DO.

In both games, the original, turn-based game cycle of the board game has been replaced by a mixture of real-time and tactical phases (mainly carried out in the limited pause mode). This and other circumstances make the said tactical shooter not an exact implementation of the board game. However, the display takes place in only one level and the game only uses strict 90 ° bends in the corridors.

Neither game had a high level of awareness in the gaming scene, nor the noteworthy market success associated with it.

In 2013 a new turn-based tactical game for PCs ( Microsoft Windows , OS X , Linux , iOS ) as well as PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , PS Vita and Wii U was launched. Metacritic determined a Metascore of 58 out of 22 reviews.
