The Bavarian casinos are public companies of the Free State of Bavaria and belong to the state lottery administration in Bavaria (based in Munich ).

The offer includes all games of chance common in Germany . In contrast to the commercial arcades, the Bavarian casinos are allowed to offer a big game. This includes American Roulette (partly also French Roulette ), Black Jack and Poker . In addition to the big game, the Bavarian casinos also offer a slot machine game as a small game. A Bavaria-wide jackpot has been played since December 1997 (Bayern Jackpot).

The Bavarian casinos are obliged by the State Treaty on Gambling to offer a suitable program to prevent gambling addiction . The trained employees are required to address gaming guests who display problematic gaming behavior and to offer them information on how to combat gaming addiction.

history

Before the approval of casinos in Bavaria, there was heated discussion in the Bavarian state parliament , in which the CSU in particular refused approval for moral reasons. The SPD- led Hoegner cabinet pushed through the approval on April 21, 1955 with 92 votes to 79 and 16 abstentions. This gave the casinos in Bad Kissingen , Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Bad Wiessee and Bad Reichenhall the licenses required to operate games.

Between 1955 and 1962 the casino affair was the subject of public and internal discussions. In February 1961, the Bavarian State Parliament, now dominated by the CSU, decided to close the casinos again. However, this decision was never implemented, and four years later the Free State nationalized the casinos.

Until 1990, only the four above-mentioned casinos were operated in Bavaria under the Casino Act of 1933. In 1990 the Lindau casino, opened in 1950 and privately licensed, was added. With these five state-licensed casinos only the administrative districts of Lower Franconia , Swabia and Upper Bavaria were essentially covered. The administrative districts of Upper and Middle Franconia , Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate were not supplied with casinos .

To take this into account, the Bavarian State Parliament passed a new casino law in July 1995. The aim was:

  • a sufficient and balanced offer
  • a comprehensive coverage as well as
  • an extensive prevention of the overlapping of the catchment areas.

In view of these priorities, the new casinos were established in Bad Füssing (September 1999), Bad Kötzting (February 2000), Feuchtwangen (March 2000) and Bad Steben (March 2001) near the border with other German countries or abroad . Each administrative district thus has a state casino.

The number of employees in the casinos was given as 677 in 2013 (five years earlier 776), the gross gaming revenue was 65 million euros (128 million euros in 2006).
