history

Sports in 1905

Sport was launched on May 13, 1905 by Guilherme Fonseca. In the same year the club played its first game against the English Eleven , a team founded by English immigrants. The game ended 1-1 and Torquato Gonçalves scored the first goal for the young club. In 1915, sport took part for the first time in the national championship, the Campeonato Pernambucano . In the final on December 16, 1916, the Sport Club do Recife defeated local rivals Santa Cruz FC 4-1 and won the provincial championship for the first time.

In 1987 Sport Recife, under coach Émerson Leão , won the national championship so far, the Campeonato Brasileiro , for the only time , although the awarding of the title was very controversial in that season. This victory allowed participation in the Copa Libertadores , but in which Sport was eliminated from Peru as third in a group with Guarani FC , Alianza Lima and Universitario Lima .

Historical club emblem

In the 1990s, the team experienced a downturn that was marked by ascents and relegations. However, the year 2008 went down in the club's history as particularly successful. It was not only possible to win the national championship title of Pernambuco for the third time in a row and also to hold the class with 11th place in Série A, but also the first win in the national cup competition, the Copa do Brasil .

In the final first leg in June, in front of the record crowd of 63,871 spectators at the Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo , Sport lost 3-1 to the host Corinthians . Substitute Enilton's goal in the final minute was worth gold, as a 2-0 second leg in June was enough for the Recife team to win the cup due to the away goals rule . Sport is not only the first club from the north-east of the country to win this competition, but also qualifies for the Copa Libertadores for the second time.

The club was relegated at the end of the 2009 season as 20th and last with 7 wins and 31 points from 38 games.

In 2011, the team made it back to the Brazilian first division. In the 2012 season, however, the club rose directly from seventeenth. In the 2013 season, the soccer team managed to return to the first division with a dramatic game against Boa Esporte, a team from Minas Gerais, with the result 3 X 2.

Stadion

The club plays its home games at the Estádio Adelmar da Costa Carvalho , named after a former club president who is generally referred to as Ilha do Retiro only because of its location . The stadium was inaugurated on July 4, 1937 with the inaugural game of Sport against local rivals Santa Cruz FC . Sport won here 6: 5.

The stadium with its 105 m × 78 m field has a capacity of 35,000 spectators. The attendance record was set on June 7, 1987. 56,875 viewers saw the 2-0 success of Sport in the game against CA Porto for the national championship of Pernambuco.

The Ilha do Retiro was the venue for the preliminary round match between Chile and the USA at the 1950 World Cup . After the USA had defeated England 1-0 in the previous game, they lost to Chile 2-5 here.
