Spytkowice is a village and seat of the rural municipality of the same name in the powiat Wadowicki of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .

geography

The place is on the right bank of the Vistula . The neighboring towns are Palczowice in the west, Miejsce in the north, Oklesna and Podłęże in the northeast, Ryczów in the east, Bachowice in the south.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1229 when Duke Henry I of Silesia held a meeting of the Polish Piasts here . The Duke was captured by Konrad of Mazovia during a church celebration in Spytkowice (so there was a church in the village).

The area between the rivers Skawa in the west and Skawinka in the east was separated from Lesser Poland in 1274 and attached to the Duchy of Opole . The Duchy of Opole was divided in 1281 after the death of Wladislaus I von Opole . From 1290 the village belonged to the Duchy of Teschen and from 1315 to the Duchy of Auschwitz , from 1327 under feudal rule of the Kingdom of Bohemia (the place was mentioned as oppidum Spitkowicz in the accompanying document). Since 1445 it belonged to the Duchy of Zator , which was sold to Poland in 1494.

Between 1488 and 1617 the place belonged to the famous Myszkowski family. For example, in 1513 the owner was Wawrzyniec Myszkowski, who murdered the last Duke of Zator, John V.

During the first partition of Poland , Spytkowice became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Spytkowice became part of Poland again. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II .

From 1975 to 1998 Spytkowice was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
