The Catholic parish church of Saint-Denys-du-Saint-Sacrement was built in the years 1826 to 1835 by the architect Étienne-Hippolyte Godde (1781-1869) in the classicism style. It is at 68 rue de Turenne in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris . The nearest metro station is Saint-Sébastien - Froissart on line 8 .

history

The church was built on the site of a chapel that once belonged to a monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament that was disbanded during the French Revolution . In 1823 the city of Paris acquired the site and had the monastery buildings demolished. With the construction of the new church they commissioned the architect Étienne-Hippolyte Godde , who is also the plans for the church Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Nouvelle in the 2nd arrondissement and Saint-Pierre-du-Gros-Caillou in the 7th arrondissement, designed would have. The church was consecrated in 1835 . She received the patronage of St. Dionysius , the martyr and first bishop of Paris, and the Most Holy Sacrament in memory of the former Benedictine monastery.

Exterior construction

The portal facade of the church is designed as a peristyle . Six Ionic columns support an architrave , which is crowned by a triangular gable . The figures of the tympanum , created in 1845 by Jean-Jacques Feuchère (1807-1852), represent the three divine virtues of faith, love and hope. The reliefs above the portal are by Noémie Constant (1832-1888) and symbolize the cardinal virtues of bravery, Justice, wisdom and moderation.

The church is laid out according to the scheme of an early Christian basilica . The nave has three naves and is divided into nine bays . Two rows of columns with Ionic capitals support the barrel vault of the main nave, decorated with cassettes and pierced by skylights, and separate it from the two side aisles. The latter are covered with flat coffered ceilings. The choir is closed in a semicircle and vaulted by a semi-dome with a skylight. A grisaille painting by Alexandre-Denis Abel de Pujol (1787–1861) depicting St. Dionysius preaching in Gaul covers almost the entire apse wall. Abel de Pujol also designed the ceiling painting dedicated to God the Father , Jesus and Mary .

Main organ

The church has two organs from the 19th century.

The main organ is the work of organ builder Louis Callinet from 1839. It was expanded in 1866 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and restored in 1870 by Joseph Gutschenritter (1970). The instrument has 38 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The actions are electric.

The choir organ was built in 1867 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll . The instrument has 12 registers on two manuals and a pedal. The actions are mechanical.

Furnishing

In the Genoveva chapel hangs a mural from 1844 by Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) depicting a Pietà (or Descent from the Cross).
