Entombment of the Master of Chaource

The Roman Catholic parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Chaource , a town in the department of Aube in the French region of Grand Est , has a choir from the 13th century and a nave of the 16th century. The church has a rich sculptural decoration, in particular a burial group from 1515 and a nativity scene with gilded wooden figures, also from the 16th century. Numerous lead glass windows from the Renaissance period have also survived . In 1840, the church consecrated to John the Baptist was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

The choir goes back to a church that was consecrated at the beginning of the 14th century. From 1531 the nave was renewed . The northern side chapels and the north portal were built between 1531 and 1537, the southern side chapels were added between 1542 and 1548 and the central nave was raised. The nave, which was originally planned to be much longer, was not completed, but closed with a temporary wall. This was reinforced with buttresses in 1843.

architecture

The nave has three naves and is divided into three bays . The main and side aisles are covered by ribbed vaults with keystones carved with angels, heads and coats of arms.

The choir is also three-bay and just closed. The first two bays are designed as a hall choir with their three naves of equal height . Chapels are attached to the first and third yoke on both sides. The third yoke has a single nave. A modest bell tower rises above the western choir bay.

Chapelle du Sépulcre (Chapel of the Entombment)

This slightly lower chapel was built in the 16th century to house the burial group. The chapel is covered by a flattened barrel , the walls and ceiling are decorated with paintings from the 16th century. A narrow door leads from the choir to the chapel. It is spanned by a keel arch on which a helmet and the donor's coat of arms are depicted, an angel is enthroned above it.

Renaissance window

rosette

The church has several stained glass windows from the 16th century.

  • The rose window above the north portal contains fragments of a Renaissance window from 1544 depicting the Seven Sorrows of Mary .
  • The windows in the Chapelle du Paradis (Paradise Chapel or Chapel of John the Evangelist) depict scenes from the Apocalypse , the legend of Saint Sebastian (from 1536) and the Last Judgment .
  • The Saint-Jean-Décolasse chapel has partly retained its original glazing. The grisaille windows with scenes of the Passion were damaged in the bombing in 1940, but could be restored.
  • The windows of the Chapelle Saint-Georges (George's Chapel) show scenes from the legend of St. George and the coats of arms of the Monstier and Vaudrey families, as well as the arms of Chaource and Champagne.
