History and architecture

Choir view

The simple brick hall was built in 1782/1783 using the remains of the wall from the previous building. The presented four-storey west tower with eight-sided dome is from 1786. The builders were Lorenz Moll and Jakob Esser. The three-sided choir closure was added in 1864 according to plans by Heinrich Nagelschmidt from Cologne. A mirrored ceiling was installed in the interior. The neo-Gothic furnishings fit harmoniously into the baroque room.

In the period from November 1944 to February 27, 1945, the church building was damaged by the effects of the war and then restored under the direction of Johann Bartz from Heinsberg.

Since 2010 Gerderath is no longer an independent parish. It was merged with some other former parishes to form the parish of St. Lambertus Erkelenz. This in turn merged in 2015 with the parish of St. Maria and Elisabeth Erkelenz to form the new large parish of Christkönig Erkelenz.

  • The two side altars, St. Christopher and St. Mary's altars, from 1871 also come from the Bong workshop.
  • The twelve arched windows that exist today were made in 1953 based on the templates of the Krefeld painter Josef Strater. The ten windows in the nave are made of colored circular ornaments ( antique glass and lead). The two windows in the choir show the coronation of Mary on the left and the Ascension of Christ on the right . These two windows are made of colored antique glass, lead and black solder .
  • The carved pulpit is decorated with the representations of the four doctors of the church Ambrosius, Augustine, Hieronimus and Gregorius.

organ

By 1695 at the latest, the Gerderath parish already had an organ. The builder is unknown.

In 1788 the existing organ was replaced by Maximilian Schauten the Elder. Ä. from Jülich expanded.

The organ was rebuilt in the romantic style in 1877 on the initiative of Gerderath vicar and parish administrator Franz Nekes . Joseph Koulen from Heinsberg added another manual to nine registers to the originally single-manual organ.

In 1928 the organ builder Josef Breuer from Zülpich added the only independent pedal register, the Subbass 16 ', to the organ.

After careful consideration, it was decided in 1982 to commission the company Weimbs Orgelbau from Hellenthal in the Eifel with the dismantling of the organ to the presumed disposition of 1788. The Subbass 16 'added in 1928 has been retained.

The baroque organ is tuned to a medium tone and today has the following disposition:
