The Catholic chapel St. Georg (also called St. Georg am Weinberg ) in Schliersee , a market in the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach , was built on a hill (vineyard) about 35 meters above the level of the Schliersee. The chapel at Hans-Miederer-Straße 4, above the parish church of St. Sixtus, is a protected architectural monument .

history

Georg von Waldeck the Elder had the building erected in the mid-14th century after he was freed from Turkish captivity. The choir followed in 1470. Over 130 years later, from 1606 onwards, Ludwig von Maxlrain (a son of Wolf Dietrich von Maxlrain ) redesigned the interior in an early Baroque style. He had chosen the church for his burial place and was buried in a crypt directly in front of the altar in 1608 .

In 1624 the high altar , which still exists today, was built . He is attributed to Stephan Zwinck from Miesbach . The northern side altar followed in 1628, but the southern one not until 1708. In 1781 the Maxlrain crypt collapsed, and part of the chapel jewelry was also destroyed. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the St. Georgs Chapel shone in new splendor when the architectural painter Wilhelm Gail took care of its restoration, who liked to spend his summer in Schliersee. During this restoration, the organ was also installed, and the roof turret was built .

architecture

The nave is a two- bay hall building with arched windows and a flat wooden ceiling. The slightly retracted choir has a 5/8 end and Gothic pointed arch windows . It is covered by a reticulated vault .

The nave and choir have a continuous ridge height and are covered with shingles . Shingles also cover the entire west gable. The portal is on the south side of the nave.

Furnishing

  • The free-standing high altar shows in the triumphal arch structure framed by columns a carved group with St. George who is about to kill the dragon . On the predella of the altar is a panel of the crucifixion of Christ.
  • In the north side altar three saints are depicted with their attributes of saints : in the middle Leonhard with the chain, on the left John the Baptist with the lamb and on the right Katharina with the wheel.
  • On the side walls of the choir there are two Gothic console figures: St. Sixtus and St. Barbara .
  • The organ was built by Joseph Krembodner. It has a manual (C - f 3 ) with four registers (Gamba 8 ', Gedackt 8', Fugara 4 'and Flaut 4') and a pedal (C - f °) attached to the manual . It was restored in 2006.
