General

It is not known when exactly a church has existed in Udenbreth. In any case, Udenbreth originally belonged to the parish Kronenburg and already owned a church in the 16th century.

In the middle of the 16th century, Count Dietrich VI. von Manderscheid-Schleiden introduced the new teaching in his field during the Reformation . The count then appointed the Lutheran preacher Reiner von Kall as pastor in Udenbreth . Around 1597 Udenbreth became Catholic again and the place again became a branch of the Kronenburg parish.

In the second half of the 17th century, Udenbreth was finally separated from Kronenburg and raised to an independent parish . During the French era , the parish fell to the diocese of Liège and was reassigned to the Archdiocese of Cologne in 1821 , to which Udenbreth also belonged before. Since 1930 the place belongs to the diocese of Aachen .

Building history

Nothing more is known about the first church in Udenbreth. This building was renovated in 1730, but closed in 1823 due to disrepair. The service was then held in the neighboring villages of Ramscheid and Rescheid . In the meantime there was a plan to build a common parish church in the Kamberg between the villages of Udenbreth and Rescheid . After this plan was rejected, in 1828 the old Udenbrether church was torn down except for the tower. Under the direction of the municipal master builder Christian Wilhelm Ulich, a new single-nave church in the classicism style was built by 1832 , which was attached to the old tower. This church became dilapidated and demolished in the 1900s. In 1910, a new parish church was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The plans for this were made by the Cologne architect Franz Statz . During the Second World War , the church was so badly destroyed in the course of the Ardennes offensive in 1944 that only the outer walls of the nave and the choir remained .

During the reconstruction it was decided to keep the outer walls of the nave and choir. The reconstruction was carried out according to plans by Olefer architect Norbert Hieronymi between 1948 and 1951, who included the existing walls in the new building. The consecration of the new church took place on August 12, 1951. Between 1969 and 1970 the church was renovated.
