General
Hollerath was always a branch of the Reifferscheid parish . It is not known when exactly there was a church building in Hollerath. However, a church was built in the 15th or 16th century. In 1682 the inhabitants of Hollerath set up a foundation for the maintenance of their own pastor, which was also recognized by the Reifferscheider pastor. In 1695 the Hollerath Chapel was elevated to a branch church , giving the community a certain degree of independence. Since then, baptisms have been allowed in Hollerath, which was previously only possible in Reifferscheid. However, the sacrament of marriage was still only given in Reifferscheid.
Due to the parish registrations during the French occupation of the Rhineland , Hollerath was finally separated from the mother parish Reifferscheid and raised to an independent parish . At the same time, the new parish came to the Diocese of Trier . It was not until 1821 that the parish returned to the re-established Archdiocese of Cologne . The parish has been part of the Aachen diocese since 1930 .
Building history
It is not known when the first chapel was built in Hollerath. In the 15th or 16th century, a new church was built in the late Gothic style, of which the choir is still preserved today. This church was rebuilt in the 18th century. The nave was torn down and a new three-bay nave was built. The choir and the bell tower were preserved. The parish church was renovated between 1855 and 1856. In 1911, the Cologne architect Heinrich Forthmann submitted plans for a new bell tower, but these were not implemented. The Gothic bell tower that was built in front of the nave in the west was only demolished between 1920 and 1924. At this point the nave has now been extended by two bays to a total of five bays . The new bell tower was added to the south wall of the choir. The plans for the renovation work were created by the Hellenthal architect Josef Heinen.
As a result of the Second World War , the Hollerath parish church was destroyed in 1944 and 1945, except for the surrounding walls. The reconstruction took place between 1948 and 1950 according to plans by Norbert Hieronymi from Olef . The remains of the bell tower and the late Gothic choir were included in the new building. The nave was completely rebuilt. On August 20, 1954, the new parish church was finally consecrated .
Building description
St. Bernhard is a single-nave, east-facing hall church made of plastered quarry stone with a one-bay, three-sided closed choir, on the south side of which the three-storey bell tower is built. The nave is spanned by a slightly inclined barrel vault. The nave is a modern building from the late 1940s with six arched windows each on the north and south sides. The core of the choir dates back to the late Gothic period, but was redesigned in connection with the reconstruction of the church. The basement of the bell tower dates from 1920-1924, the upper floor was also built at the end of the 1940s and provided with a four-sided slated tower spire.
Furnishing
The baptismal font from around 1500, the tabernacle by the artist Ludwig Mohnen from 1956 and a figure of the holy clan with representations of St. Mary the Infant Jesus , St. Mother Anna , St. Joseph and St. Joachim probably from the 15th century. The stained glass windows are works by Mario Machado from 1990. The twelve windows in the nave depict the Twelve Apostles . The windows in the choir depict Mary with the Child and St. John the Baptist . The organ is a work of the organ building company Heinz Wilbrand, Übach-Palenberg from 1975. The work has 8 registers .
Bells
In the bell tower there are three bronze bells from two different foundries.
