St. Catherine's

St. Katharinen is a Roman Catholic church in Halberstadt . From its construction in the 13th century to its secularization in 1810, it was the monastery church of the Dominican monastery of St. Katharinen.

history

As early as 1224, only three years after the death of the founder of the order, Dominikus , Bishop Friedrich II of Halberstadt approved the establishment of the Halberstadt Dominican Convent . The first friars probably came from the Paulus monastery in Hildesheim . The church and convent building were completed in 1231.

The plague of 1565 put an end to the monastery's first heyday . The following year, Heinrich Julius became the first Protestant administrator to rule the diocese. The orphaned Katharinenkloster was subordinated to the now biconfessional cathedral chapter and converted into a school.

In the course of the Thirty Years' War , Leopold Wilhelm of Austria , a Catholic bishop again came to power in 1628 , who tried to recatholicize his numerous dioceses . In the same year, the Katharinenkloster was repopulated with initially two Dominicans from the Holy Cross Monastery in Osnabrück . Interrupted only by the time of the Swedish occupation 1632–1637, the St. Catherine's Monastery continued to exist in Prussian times on the basis of the normal year regulation of the Peace of Westphalia . Until secularization, the Dominicans worked through liturgy , sermons and pastoral care for the small Roman Catholic local community as well as in the Protestant environment and in the Brandenburg diaspora . The most important prior at this time was Raimund Bruns .

After the last heyday of the monastery in the 18th century, it was dissolved (secularized) under Napoleonic rule and became state property. The convent building was used as a warehouse and factory, but was bought by the parish in 1910. Since 1920 they have housed a convent of the Carmelites of the Divine Heart of Jesus as well as a day nursery , kindergarten and home for disabled children and young people. The church belongs to the Halberstadt Catholic St. Burchard Parish .

architecture

St. Catherine's Church was completed in 1360, but contains older parts. As a towerless Gothic hall church with a long choir , it corresponds to the type of mendicant order churches . The three-aisled nave comprises five bays with four-lane tracery windows . The three-bay choir closes polygonally and has a slender roof turret . The groin vaults are only preserved in the choir; the nave has a modern coffered ceiling . In the eastern nave bays, the still Romanesque round arches between the central and side aisles are striking.

In the forecourt of the church on the so-called “Halberstädter Bischofswand”, which was designed by Paderborn's cathedral master builder Kurt Matern (1884–1968), there is a bust of Pope Clemens II. Clemens is there as well as on the grave figure in Bamberg with a rationale with breast shield shown, a high medieval mark of dignity for bishops.

Furnishing

In the 18th century the church received a rich baroque interior , which was last restored in the 1980s. The four-storey high altar with elaborate carvings and numerous figures of angels and saints, including Dominican saints as well as the church patroness Katharina and the patroness Barbara, is remarkable .

organ

The organ was probably built by the organ builder Wilhelm Bergen (Halberstadt) around 1873. The baroque case comes from the previous organ. The instrument has 26 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
