St. Mary's Visitation (Rhöndorf)
The Catholic parish church of St. Mary's Visitation in Rhöndorf , a district of Bad Honnef in the Rhein-Sieg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was built between 1902 and 1905. The church in neo-Romanesque style is located at Frankenweg 125 opposite the park of the Haus im Turm .
history
As the population grew, Rhöndorf wanted to become an independent parish in the 19th century . The town's Lady Chapel was unsuitable for this purpose in the long term. From 1896 there was a church building association in Rhöndorf . After the construction of the church had been decided, the new parish of Rhöndorf got its own priest in 1901. In 1902, the municipal administration also recognized the request to build a church as justified. The construction was made possible by the foundation of the Merkens family, who, in addition to a substantial sum of money of 5,000 marks, made the 30 acres available. She received a family tomb made available under the parish church.
With a large share of the population, the construction of the church began in 1902; the ceremonial foundation stone was laid on August 23, 1903. On October 5, 1905 it on the patronage " Visitation " ordained ; the solemn consecration by Auxiliary Bishop Müller followed on June 17, 1908. The tower was not completed until 1928. On 10/11 March 1945 the church was destroyed by bombs. The restoration, combined with an expansion, took place until 1949 with the participation of the architect Paul Krücken - on August 21, 1949, the community, which had previously moved to the chapel of the mothers' rest home, was able to move back into the parish church. In 1953, a statue of the Madonna made of shell limestone by the Honnef sculptor Peter Terkatz was installed above the portal . In the years 1962 to 1965 the chancel and the facade were redesigned.
During the interior renovation in autumn 1991, the chancel was redesigned and the color of the arches of the church was changed, and the ceiling and walls of the central nave and side aisles were structured by stucco profiles . The church building is not a listed building , but a wayside cross ( stone cross ) dated to 1608 , which is attached to the street side of the church.
The grave slab of Heinrich von Drachenfels († 1530), the last burgrave of Drachenfels , has been on the tower side of the church since 1903 .
Choir window
The lead glass windows in the choir were created in 1956 by the Oidtmann glass painting company in Linnich based on designs by the artist Eduard Horst . They represent the flight into Egypt , the birth of Jesus, the three wise men and St. Konrad (Bishop of Constance).
organ
The instrument in St. Mary's Visitation carries Opus 1404 from the Klais company ; it was installed in 1968. The organ has 1160 pipes with 16 registers , divided into two manuals and organ .

Trivia
A place sign in the church reminds of Konrad Adenauer , who was a member of the community. In one of the side aisles there is a window engraving on which Adenauer is depicted with feather headdresses of the Sioux Indians, which is intended to commemorate his trip to America in 1956.
