The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Maria is a late Gothic hall church in Weißdorf , Hof district ( Upper Franconia ). It is a protected cultural property under the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict .

history

Woodcut-like depiction of the crucifixion as a column painting with the year 1483

The church was probably built between 1470 and 1500. Several wall paintings inside the church and the tower with the dates 1479 and 1483 prove this.

At the same place there was presumably already a church, which is indirectly attested by the presence of a first local pastor in 1397. This church seems to have been completely demolished in the 15th century. According to a document from 1418, she was also consecrated to the mother of Jesus .

The builders were Hans and Martin von Sparneck , who sat on the Weissdorf moated castle . As early as 1469, the bishop of the Bamberg diocese , Georg I von Schaumberg , enfeoffed Hans von Sparneck with the Weißdorfer parish and the early mass. Until the replacement in 1975 by Werner Freiherr Leuckart von Weißdorf, the church and the aristocratic seat remained connected through the church patronage . As early as 1959, the partial church patronage of the princes of Schönburg -Waldenburg, which was linked to the manor in Bug , was extinguished with the sale of all their properties around Schwarzenbach an der Saale .

Probably the oldest depiction of the church dates from the year 1523. The colored woodcut by war photo reporter Hans Wandereisen shows the destruction of the Weissdorf moated castle by the Swabian Federation on the edge as well as the church of St. Maria.

From 2013, the church will undergo extensive renovation, starting with the outer facade and the church environment.

Furnishing

Altar of the Weißdorfer Church

altar

The baroque altar was created by Johann Michael Doser from Auerbach in the Upper Palatinate and erected on December 12, 1712. During renovations in 1836/37, the originally richly figured altar was converted into a pulpit altar . In 1957 it was based on its baroque shape and the pulpit, which was set back to the choir arch, was replaced by the original altarpiece with a resurrection scene. During the renovation work in 2004, a forgotten nativity scene integrated into the altarpiece came to light again.

Baptism angel

Just like the altar, the baptismal angel , made in 1714 and bearing a shell- shaped basin, comes from Doser's workshop .

organ

The organ was built in 1985 by the organ building company Ekkehard Simon (Landshut-Ergolding) as a mechanical slider chest instrument. The organ has 24 registers on two manuals and a pedal .

Open Church

Our church is open. Come in! (Shield) .JPG

The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Weißdorf participates in the campaign Open Evangelical Churches in Bavaria ( Our church is open. Come in ) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria .

The church building is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside of the service times.

As part of the Open Monument Day , the otherwise unopened lower tower house and the historic roof structure were repeatedly made accessible to the public.

Pulpit speeches

Since 2005, prominent speakers and experts from different areas have been in the pulpit at irregular intervals and speak on a technical or current topic.

The most prominent speaker in the pulpit so far in February 2008 was the then Bavarian Minister of State for Federal and European Affairs Markus Söder .

literature

In addition to many pulpit speeches and stories from the "early youth" of St. Maria, this script also contains five letters that the Church of St. Maria writes to her congregation. In it she tells part of her story and that of her surroundings. The author of the 5 letters is Günther Bock, member of the church council from 2000 to 2012. In the church there is a lectern with the letters and other stories from the time the church was built. The midwife, the baron's wife and some other "contemporary witnesses" tell their experiences from this time.
