Parish Church of St. Martin

The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Jengen , a municipality in the Ostallgäu district in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , is essentially a late Gothic brick building from around 1500, which was redesigned in the Rococo style in the middle of the 18th century . The style of the church is a smaller copy of the parish church in neighboring Kaufbeuren and, like it, is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours .

Exterior construction

The outer walls of the nave are decorated with pilaster strips and clover-leaf friezes . The choir is supported by stepped buttresses . In the northern corner of the choir rises the square bell tower covered with a pointed helmet, the substructure of which dates from around 1200. The upper floors, which were built around 1500, are structured by cornices and glare fields, which also have clover-leaf friezes. The top floor is broken through by arched, triple sound arcades .

The interior, in a four axis articulated hall structure is of a lunette ton covered by barely protruding from the wall pilasters with fine stucco capitals and profiled beams is worn. A round arch leads into the strongly drawn-in, three-sided closed choir . A double gallery with curved parapets forms the western end of the nave .

The stucco decor was created by Joseph Fischer the Elder in 1755 .

Frescoes

Nave fresco

The ceiling paintings are shaped by the style of the Nazarenes . The ceiling fresco in the choir depicting the heart of Jesus was done in 1927 by the church painter Kaspar Schleibner . The nave fresco, on which Mary with the baby Jesus and the distribution of scapulars are shown, bears the signature of Benedikt Locher and the year 1889.

Furnishing

  • The high altar is a work from around 1740. The altar sheet with the depiction of the donation of the coat of St. Martin probably dates from the end of the 17th century. The figures on the side depict St. Benedict , Pope Silvester I , St. Ulrich , the patron saint of the Augsburg diocese, and Johannes Nepomuk .
  • The side altars, the Marian altar on the left and the Joseph altar on the right, also date from the middle of the 18th century. The altar excerpts are decorated with winged angel heads and angel figures.
  • The Rococo pulpit was created around 1750/60.
  • The large crucifix on the north wall of the nave is marked with the year 1520. It is attributed to Veit Stoss and was in the parish church of St. Peter in Munich until 1816 .
