St. Nikolai (Unterwellenborn)
The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Nikolai is located in Unterwellenborn , a municipality in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia . The parish Unterwellenborn belongs to the parish area Saalfeld II (center) -Unterwellenborn in Kirchenkreis Rudolstadt-Saalfeld the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
Building description
The church building was first mentioned in a document in 1125. The Romanesque hall church with a choir tower and a recessed rectangular choir was built in the late 12th century. The present nave was renewed in 1509 using parts of the Romanesque structure and the tower above the choir was rebuilt. In 1742, the nave was widened to the north, so that the retracted choir tower is shifted from the central axis to the south. In addition, the windows and the helmet of the tower were changed. The church bells from 1485 and 1728 have been preserved. In the interior , the ceiling was raised with a flat wooden barrel vault and two-storey galleries were built in. In 1936 the paintings in the choir were exposed during renovation work.
On the north wall there are two consoles at the side of the entrance with gaff heads . Next to the altar is the passage to the choir. In the choir the vault has bulging vault ribs and lime secco painting from the 1st half of the 14th century, which shows Christ as judge of the world and Mary and John as intercessors. The side belt arches are decorated with ornaments. The winged altar from 1522 has carved figures from the Saalfeld school . In the shrine the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan is shown, in the wings on the left Saint Anne and Saint Apollonia , on the right Saint Sebastian and Saint Augustine . When closed, the show panel paintings , the Ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The predella has a relief depicting the Lord's Supper . In the north gallery is the stone pulpit from the 16th century with representations of the evangelists . The alabaster baptismal font shows Noah's ark , the circumcision of the Lord and the baptism of Christ. The gallery for the organ is located above the altar . This has 16 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal . It was built in 1744 by Johann Heinrich Scherff and restored in 1994 by Rösel & Hercher Orgelbau .
