history

Portal of the west side

In 1334 the parishes of Dernau and Mayschoss were first handed down. In 1382 a Katharinenkapelle is mentioned in Mayschoss. There must also have been a larger church in the village, which served as the burial place of the Counts of Virneburg . On November 14, 1537 Mayschoss was raised to its own parish . It was initially subordinate to the Marienthal Monastery and later to the Klosterrath Abbey . From 1802 the parish of Mayschoss belonged to the diocese of Aachen and from 1824 until today it belongs to the diocese of Trier .

Since the church had become too small and dilapidated by 1726 , a new building was decided in 1906. Except for the quarry stone tower, built in 1721/27, all parts of the old church were demolished. On June 9, 1908, the foundation stone of the new church was laid by Trier Auxiliary Bishop Karl Ernst Schrod . The plans were drawn up by the Neuwied architects Heinrich and Theodor Hermann . The church was consecrated on April 25, 1912 by Trier Bishop Michael Felix Korum .

The three-aisled , four and a half jochige pillar basilica without transept is in neo-Romanesque built style.

Pulpit with representation of the church fathers and the evangelist symbols

Right at the beginning of the central nave is the tomb of Katharina von der Mark († October 30, 1645), which was made in 1646 from black Belgian granite . At the head end, children hold the coat of arms of the Lords of the Mark . The life-size figure of the deceased is depicted on the cover plate of the Tumba and a hunting dog rests at her feet , the symbol of loyalty. At the foot end there is an inscription which translates as follows: The illustrious gentleman, Count Ernst von der Mark and Schleiden , Baron in Lümay and Serein , Herr in Kerpen and Saffenburg etc. has the illustrious mistress, Countess Katharina von der Mark, his most beloved and most loyal wife, who was distinguished just as much by the splendor of her virtue as by her loveliness, once died on October 30, 1645 to the greatest grief of all, this monument was erected and completed in the year of salvation in 1646.

At the altar are the statues of the patron saint of the church, St. Nicholas and St. Rochus. The pulpit from around 1700 shows the four Latin church fathers Ambrosius of Milan , Jerome as a hermit and cardinal, Augustine of Hippo and Gregory the Great in half-relief . Between them are the symbols of the four evangelists . Several pieces of equipment come from the former Marienthal monastery, such as B. the confessional from the 17th century, the sculpture of St. Augustine and parts of an old baroque communion bench .

The font made of trachyte dates from the 16th century and bears the coat of arms of the Counts of Virneburg .

organ

The organ , installed in 1910, comes from the organ building company Stahlhuth in Aachen and originally had 19 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
