The St. Peter and Paul Church is a Catholic church in Rauenberg in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1907 and 1910 according to plans by Johannes Schroth in the neo-Gothic style. Because of its size, it is nicknamed "Angelbachtal Cathedral".

history

Rauenberg emerged from the two settlements Ruhenberg, first mentioned in 1303, and Wedersweiler, where a parish was mentioned in 1346. Around 1400 the old Rauenberg was given up and Wedersweiler took on its name. Due to this history of development, Rauenberg had several local lords, including the Bishop of Speyer, who shared the rule. Despite the condominium , the bishop was able to prevent the introduction of the Reformation . It was not until 1677 that the Speyer Monastery acquired the entire site.

In 1513 the patronage of St. Peter and Paul was mentioned for the first time . Bishop Damian Hugo wanted to build a new church in Rauenberg in 1743, presumably in connection with the neighboring palace, although he was not required to build it. But that didn't happen, instead the church was expanded. At the end of the 19th century the church had become too small for the increased population and so the church should be expanded again. But the archbishop's building authority in Karlsruhe came to the conclusion that this was not possible, and so it was decided to build a new building. The foundation stone was laid in 1907. Three years later the new church was completed and on 16./17. In June 1910 it was consecrated by the Archbishop of Freiburg, Thomas Nörber . In 1958 and 1985 the church was renovated inside. For the 100th anniversary in 2010, an exterior renovation took place. The parish belongs since 2015, the pastoral unit or parish Letzenberg on to which the Catholic communities of places Malsch , Malsch Mountain , Mulhouse with Tairnbach , Rauenberg , Rettigheim and Rotenberg belong.
