Interior of the church

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is the village church of Wegfurt , a district of Bischofsheim in the Rhön . It belongs to the architectural monuments of Bischofsheim and is registered under the number D-6-73-117-144 in the Bavarian list of monuments .

history

The foundation walls of the church are medieval. A tympanum fragment to the right of the side portal indicates a previous church from the early 11th century. From 1601 , Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn had the current church built on the foundation walls by Master Caspar from Nordheim . The church was completed in 1607 and was consecrated on October 12, 1613. The high altar came into the church around 1700, the right side altar and the pulpit in 1750. The church received the left rococo side altar from the monastery church in Bildhausen .

After the church was described as "ruinous" in 1796, the eastern wall and about half of the southern wall of the church tower collapsed on April 23, 1807 . The bells got stuck. In the same year, the master bricklayer Michael Schauer from Saal an der Saale rebuilt the church tower and installed a retaining wall on the east side.

In 1914 the altars, the pulpit and the stations were restored and a new oak staircase to the gallery was built. With the outbreak of the First World War, the work was stopped.

In 1934 the ceiling and walls of the nave were whitewashed. A lightning strike in 1935 did not cause much damage. The church was badly damaged on April 7, 1945 during the invasion of the Americans. The windows on the south side were destroyed, the ceiling of the nave damaged by shrapnel. The damage was repaired with many volunteers. As a result of the bombardment, the top of the right side altar fell down and broke on the night of July 22nd to 23rd, 1945. It had to be put back together again in painstaking detail.

In 1948, the choir received a mortar ceiling instead of a wooden ceiling. Between 1960 and 1967 the church was renovated inside and out. In this one in the northern wall of the choir Gothic tabernacle and the grave of the priest Eucharius Mühlfeld from the center aisle of the nave Mellrichstadt exposed (1678-1679 pastor of Wegfurt). But it was attacked by stone corrosion and was sealed with cement. Valuable frescoes from the 17th century on the south wall have also been restored .

In the 1980s, a new, significantly larger sacristy was added in place of the sacristy from 1908.

An exterior renovation of the church took place in 2017. Interior renovation began in 2019.

St. Sebastian is depicted on the right side altar , on the side St. Rochus and St. Wendelinus . At the pulpit there are figures of the four evangelists . The early baroque organ was rebuilt in 1729. According to an inscription in the wind chest , the organ was bought in 1640 by the Geroda church near Bad Brückenau .
