St. Peter (formerly: St. Petri in Ketten) is the Roman Catholic church in the Lengsdorf district of Bonn, part of the Hardtberg district. It stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The first, no longer existing, Lengsdorf church emerged from a castle chapel from the Carolingian era. The location of this church was probably identical to that of the present church. Archaeological finds in the vicinity of the church support this assumption. The castle's character can still be recognized today by the high and massive north wall, which serves as a support for the church.

The Lengsdorf parish church, which was subordinate to the Cassius monastery in Bonn , was built in several construction periods up to its present form. The Romanesque choir , built around 1224, is the oldest part of the church. The nave and the south aisle were built by the end of the 13th century . Gothic style elements can already be found in the vault of the third nave yoke .

Floor plan, 1905

In this form as a two-aisled village church with a mighty tower above the easternmost nave yoke, the church has existed for many centuries.

In 1894, the north aisle was added in the style of the older south aisle and fan windows were installed in both aisles and in the choir. In 1935, according to plans by the architect Jakob Stumpf, a western vestibule was added in Romanesque forms.

The severe damage caused by World War II could be completely removed by 1959 after a tower planned by Bonn architect Toni Kleefisch (1888–1975) to replace the roof turret that had been destroyed in the war was built in 1947. The reconstruction of the church was completed with the new construction of the bell tower on the west side of the church, as the old tower, which was located above the eastern nave yoke, had been destroyed during the war.

organ

In 1985 the Klais company from Bonn created an 18- register instrument as Opus 1629 for the Lengsdorf parish church. The pipe material from the previous building (Opus 196, also from Klais) was used here. The actions are mechanical (game action) and electrical (stop action).

Bells

Before the two world wars, there was a three-part bell. The great St. Peter's Bell was cast in 1792 by the Lorraine foundries Claude de Forest, Nicolas Simon and Clément (I.) Drouot. It bore the inscription: I am sant Peters Clock / God strengthen my skirt. The next smaller bells came from Georg Claren, 1828 and from C. Renaud, 1810. This bell was destroyed in World War I and was replaced in 1922 by a three-part bell from the Junker & Edelbrock bell foundry , which had the chimes as 1 , b 1 and c 2 rang out. The Second World War also destroyed this bell. In 1955 the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher cast four bells.
