history

Weisweiler is an old parish . At the site of the church there is said to have already been a sanctuary at the time of the Celts . Probably at the time of the Carolingians in the 8th or 9th century, the first church was built in Weisweiler.

The parish and church were first mentioned in a document in 1282. In the Liber valoris from 1308, the parish is listed in the former dean's office in Jülich . At that time the owners of Weisweiler Castle were the collators . The St. Gereonstift in Cologne also owned rights to the church . In the 17th century the devotion to St. Brigida of Kildare . Her feast day, February 1st, was celebrated from then on with the blessing of bread and water.

During the French era , Weisweiler, which always belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne , came to the newly founded Diocese of Aachen in 1802 . In 1825, after the new diocese was dissolved, the parish was reassigned to the archbishopric. Weisweiler has been part of the re-established diocese of Aachen since 1930.

Hüelte has always been part of the parish. A church was built there in 1960. In 1964 Hüelte was raised to a separate pastoral care district in the parish of Weisweiler and on August 30, 1973, Weisweiler was completely separated from the parish. This was reversed on January 1, 2010, the parish of Hüüllen dissolved and re-added to the parish of Weisweiler.

Building history

It is very likely that the first church was built in Weisweiler during the Carolingian period in the 8th or 9th century. However, it can be proven that there was a church around the year 1000, which was determined by an engraving of a beam. It was first mentioned in a document in 1282.

In the second half of the 15th century, the church mentioned in 1282, about which nothing is known, was demolished except for the tower and a new nave was built in the Gothic style, which is now the western part of the parish church. In the middle of the 19th century, the church became too small and an extension was decided. The Cologne architect August Carl Lange presented plans for an extension, which were implemented in 1889. The old choir was demolished and the existing Gothic nave was extended by three bays to the east in the neo-Gothic style . A new choir was also built. As a result of these construction measures, St. Severin was essentially given its current appearance.

During the Second World War , the parish church was badly damaged between September and November 1944 and all the vaults were destroyed. During the reconstruction, a flat wooden ceiling was put in place inside. The roofs were rebuilt as they were before the war.
