history

Starz! made its debut on February 1, 1994 over the Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) cable network . The first films to air were The Scent of Women and The Crying Game . The station was originally run as a joint venture between TCI and Liberty Media , both of which were under the influence of John Malone . TCI held the majority in the station with 50.1% of the shares.

The network began as part of a seven-channel bouquet from Encore. This bouquet was originally supposed to consist of only six channels, but after a contract in 1993 granted Encore the rights to broadcast current films from Universal Pictures , another channel was added the following year to compete with HBO and Showtime .

Starz! initially broadcast, following the Encores numbering system, under the name Encore 8 , although Starz! before the other six channels that followed between July and September 1994.

At the time, the station focused on more recent films than its sister station Encore, which broadcast films from the 1960s to the 1980s. In addition to broadcasting rights to Universal Pictures films , Starz! initially also the television rights to publications by Carolco Pictures , Fine Line Features , its sister studio New Line Cinema and the Disney-owned Miramax Films , Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures , but films from these studios were not broadcast until 1997. The channel only broadcast adult content late in the evening or at night.

Initially, the availability of the Starz channels was limited to the TCIs cable network until a contract was signed with Continental Cablevision in 1995. The station gained in importance when Comcast offered Starz in Pennsylvania and New Jersey following a 1997 contract (to replace the discontinued PRISM). In the early 2000s it was Starz! Present on most of the major US cable and satellite networks, favored by the proliferation of digital television.

On July 1, 2016, Starz was bought by Canadian media company Lions Gate for $ 4.4 billion.
