The street perch village of Stechau is the largest and oldest of the spruce forest villages. In 1354 the nobles Werner and Heinrich von Stechau were named as fief carriers, but in 1350 the Kune family also had fief rights. The feudal sovereignty, however, lay with the Ileburgen on Sonnewalde . In 1474 Albrecht Raßig claimed over half of the village's fiefs. The village was in writing and was not subordinate to the office of Schlieben , but to the local liege lord or later to the manor owner. In the Thirty Years War the place was destroyed, in 1645 Stechau was desolate . In 1672 four of twenty hooves were still desolate and seven of eight gardeners .

The church was built in the second quarter of the 13th century as a stone block with a short nave. In 1732, however, the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Gottlob Heinrich von Birckholtz had the baroque palace and park built in 1752. The only surviving atonement cross in the Schliebener Land can be found in the park .

A windmill for Stechau has been handed down from the middle of the 18th century. The mill farm was at the southeast end of the village. A watermill is also mentioned in 1816 . Between 1800 and 1866 there was a grinding mill in the Frankenhain district . During the time of its existence, this grinding mill often gave rise to disputes between forest and meadow owners in the surrounding fields. In 1856 the Royal District Administrator von Kleist intervened and had a mirror pale struck to regulate the water level. It is also noteworthy that the mill burned four times between 1848 and 1856. The steam, oil and cutting mill owned by the mill owner Ernst Schulze burned to the ground on May 16, 1883.

In 1848 the landowner Röder was sent to the Prussian National Assembly in Berlin as a member of parliament. Stechau flourished economically towards the end of the 19th century. As early as 1842, protection money was no longer levied from the manor as a replacement for the previously common forced labor. With the peat extraction in the middle of the 19th century, a new source of income opened up for the farmers. By 1885 the income from the peat business increased and became the main source of income. In 1889 a field railway was planned for the more effective extraction of peat in the royal peat cut in Stechau. With the development and extraction of lignite in the nearby Lower Lusatia, peat quickly lost its importance as a fuel, and agriculture regained importance.

The manor started breeding and releasing pheasants in 1887 , so that two years later the population was so large that the animals could be hunted again.

In 1902 a dairy cooperative was founded in Stechau. As early as 1898 it was decided to found a cooperative for the towns of Trebbus , Hillmersdorf, Stechau, Arenzhain , Lichtena and Friedersdorf. A steam dairy was built in Stechau for this purpose .

In 1892 there were forest fires between Stechau and Prießen that lasted for days .

The Gontard family, who had owned the manor in Stechau since 1899, were expropriated in 1945 with the land reform .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1992, the Munich lawyer Dr. Bardia Khadjavi-Gontard the castle with some real estate. He invested a double-digit million amount in the castle and brought the property to new splendor.

In 2008 a nursery from Stechau was awarded the title "Nursery of the Year" in Brandenburg.

Administrative history

Until 1806, Stechau was assigned to the electoral , then the royal Saxon office of Schlieben , but was not subordinate to the office. The place became part of the Prussian district of Schweinitz in 1816 . From 1952 the place belonged to the Herzberg district , which in 1993 became part of the Elbe-Elster district. On December 31, 2001, the community Fichtwald was formed, for which the office of Schlieben took over the administrative tasks. Until then, Stechau was subordinate to the office of Schlieben.
