Stefan L. Brandt
Stefan L. Brandt (* 1964 in Berlin ) is a German Americanist and professor at the Karl Franzens University in Graz .
biography
Stefan L. Brandt studied from 1985 at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin . There he obtained an MA in 1992 with a thesis on Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck . In 1996 he received his doctorate with 'summa cum laude' at the Faculty of Modern Foreign Language Philologies at the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on the literature and culture of the American turn of the century (1890–1914). As a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , he went to the University of California, Irvine for one year in 1998 and carried out research from 1999 to 2001 with a grant from the German Research Foundation for his habilitation thesis on the aesthetics of the body in the literature and culture of the American post-war era (1945 -1960). He has researched at several universities and educational institutions in the USA and Canada, including a. Cornell University , UC Berkeley , UCLA , UC Riverside (Center for Ideas and Society), Huntington Library , University of Toronto , York University and Harvard University (Department of English).
After his habilitation in 2003, Stefan L. Brandt received visiting professorships at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (Chair for North American Culture, April 2004 to February 2005 and October 2008 to March 2009), at the University of Siegen (Chair for North American Cultural Studies, April 2006 to September 2008 and April 2010 to September 2011, as well as Chair of English and General Literature Studies, April 2007 to September 2008) and at the University of Vienna (Chair of American Literature and Cultural Studies, October 2011 to January 2012). He has also taught at the Technical University of Chemnitz (winter semester 2005/06) and the Ruhr University Bochum (April 2009 - March 2010). From February 2012 to January 2013 he was university professor for English and American Studies at the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna.
Since February 2013, Stefan L. Brandt has been Professor at the Institute for American Studies at the University of Graz, which he also headed from November 2013 to June 2016. From November 2013 to November 2014 he was President of the Austrian Association for American Studies .
Research areas
His main research interests are urban studies , spatial research , gender studies , early American educational literature and the transnational networking of processes of cultural self-modeling in the USA.
