The Steinau is a brook in the area of the Sandesneben-Nusse office in the Duchy of Lauenburg .

The Steinau is created north of Nusse by the confluence of the Duvenseebach with the Ritzerauer Mühlenbach and the outflow of the Ritzerauer See (Wohldbek). From there it runs as an artificial ditch through Nusse and serves as a receiving water for the local sewage treatment plant. About 500 meters after leaving the village, the stream regains its natural bed, and then flows through a hilly terminal moraine valley near Mannhagen . The Steinau belonged since 1158 after an interpolated certificate of Henry the Lion as water Stenowe the basic equipment of Tafelguts the bishops of Ratzeburg who crafted the Bailiwick Mannhagen here. In Mannhagen the Steinau valley widens again, so that the stream has the opportunity to overflow its banks when the water is high. From here the mill wheel of the Mannhagener Mühle was supplied with water until the middle of the 20th century. It was one of three mills, including a paper mill , that can be found on the Steinau since the Middle Ages. The mill building has fallen into disrepair and the stone water falls unused over an almost 2 meter high weir into a kolk .
About one kilometer further down the stream, the Steinau feeds several fish ponds, reaches the village of Hammer , which got its name from the copper hammer , which is operated here with the Steinau's water power , falls again over a weir and then passes an apartment building that has been around since the 1960s is located on the site of the previous cork mill. Outside of Hammer it flows into the Stecknitz, which has been expanded into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal .
At this point, the Slavic Steensborg used to lie on a spit of land between the two bodies of water and protected by damp meadows , which at about the same time as Liubice protected a trading post on which goods could be reloaded onto boats on the transport from the Elbe to the north. The castle was largely demolished in 1945. The rampart had a diameter of 90 to 100 meters. The mouth of the Steinau was formerly north of the Steensburg, today it is south.

The Steinau provides with its tributaries an important habitat connectivity between protected areas Hevenbruch (Koberger Forest), Ritzer Auer Hofsee and Duvenseebachniederung and Pantener Moorweiher and the surrounding area . With its meandering course, numerous gravel bars, free purged alder roots on the bank and canceled Kopfweiden provides the stream in the natural Sections of a small mosaic of habitats for numerous animals and plants. With an average gradient of around two per thousand, the flow speed of the stream can be described as moderate. The water depth in the near-natural stream sections is only a few decimeters, in front of the former cork mill in Hammer it is about 2 meters. Since the introduction of wastewater treatment, the water quality of the Steinau and thus the underwater life has improved significantly.
