geography

The parish village is located on the Main and on the southern edge of the Haßberge Nature Park between Schweinfurt and Bamberg . The Steinbach flows through the village and flows into the Main as a right tributary. The state road in 2247 and the railway Bamberg-Schweinfurt lead to the village over. The Franconian Marienweg runs through Steinbach .

history

Steinbach probably goes back to a Franconian settlement on the Main in the 7th or 8th century. Possibly the place, like Zeil am Main , was bequeathed to the Bamberg Michelsberg Monastery in 1018 by Heinrich II . The first documentary mention was in 1309, when the abbot of the Ebrach monastery exchanged the Steinbach estate with his income for half the town of Volkach . Viticulture was practiced in the place at least in 1335. The lords of the village were the Gleisenau branch of the Fuchs von Bimbach, the lords of Rotenhan and the two Hochstifte Bamberg and Würzburg . In 1686 there were 30 households in the village. Between 1616 and 1630 there were 20 executions in the course of the witch hunts. As a result of the Thirty Years War , Steinbach and its corridors were partially devastated.

In 1839 the road from Bamberg to Schweinfurt was built in Steinbach. In 1852 the Bamberg – Haßfurt railway line , which crosses the parish corridor, went into operation. In 1862 the rural community of Steinbach was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office of Haßfurt and the district court of Eltmann . Steinbach had 58 residential buildings and 330 residents in 1871, all of whom were Catholic. In 1900 the 354.75 hectare community had 307 residents and 58 residential buildings. The 306 Catholic residents belonged to the parish of Zeil am Main, 4.0 kilometers away, and the relevant denominational school was located in the village. In 1925, 358 people, all of whom were Catholic, lived in 60 residential buildings in Steinbach.

In 1950 the church village at that time had 462 residents and 66 residential buildings. The Protestant residents belonged to the parish in Gleisenau, 3.8 kilometers away . In 1970 there were 424 residents and in 1987 442 residents and 106 residential buildings with 147 apartments.

Steinbach has been part of the Ebelsbach community since May 1, 1978. From 1979 to 1989 a land consolidation of the vineyards was carried out. The upper third, a terrace with dry stone walls, remained as a historic vineyard. Here the winemakers practice viticulture according to an old tradition.

Catholic Kuratiekirche St. Wendelin

Steinbach originally belonged to the parish of Eltmann. In 1556 the parish was changed to the parish of Zeil. The Catholic Kuratiekirche St. Wendelin goes back to a chapel and was built in 1766. The hall building has a gable facade and a retracted choir opposite . The facade is structured with ashlar. A gable roof with a ridge turret with an onion hood forms the upper end.

A total of six architectural monuments are listed in the Bavarian list of monuments .
