Protection status and protection purpose

The nature reserve was legally established by an ordinance issued by the Chemnitz Regional Council. Part of the area was placed under protection as early as 1961.

According to Paragraph 3 of the Protected Areas Ordinance, the protection purpose is to maintain or restore and develop a favorable conservation status of these natural or semi-natural habitat types (LRT) of community interest according to the Habitats Directive: Mountain Mähwiesen (LRT 6520), Hainsimsen-beech forests (LRT 9110), Mixed ravine and hillside forests (LRT 9180) and alder, ash and softwood floodplain forests (LRT 91E0) Furthermore, the mixed spruce and spruce forests that are spatially and functionally linked to the habitat types listed are to be preserved and developed in all stages of development, insofar as they are necessary for the biotope network and preservation of the ecological functionality of the area are important. Also rare and endangered plant species such as silver fir , greenish forest hyacinth and peat moss Sphagnum warnstorfii are to be preserved and redeveloped, but also vegetation communities in which these plants are typically found. The areas of the Steinbach and Rothenbach, with their “richly structured mosaics from different natural forest and grassland communities”, are to be preserved “because of their rarity, special character and outstanding beauty”. Finally, the goal is set to “the preservation of unique landscape potentials and coenoses for ecological, natural history and regional research”.
