The Great Crane Lake (Czech: Velké jeřábí jezero ) is one of the most important raised bogs in the Ore Mountains . The nature reserve of the same name, comprising other areas, was placed under nature protection in 1961 .

location

The high moor lies south of Carlsfeld and the Carlsfeld dam at 950  m above sea level. NHN on the plateau of the Erzgebirge ridge on both sides of the German-Czech border. Its area extends to the municipal territories of Muldenhammer and Eibenstock . This means that part of the area of the Großer Kranichsee lies in the Vogtlandkreis .

To the west of the crane lake was the black pond . To the east there is the Kleiner Kranichsee , whose bog core, in contrast to the Großer Kranichsee, is on the German side.

etymology

The name of the raised bog is associated with the Slavic word granica for border . In the past, bog areas were referred to as “to see” or “ see ”, so that the name means “Grenzmoor”. In the Saxon leaflets of 1791 the area is referred to as "the Cranich See".

meaning

The Große Kranichsee is part of the SPA area (bird sanctuary) “Western Ore Mountains ” and the core of the Natura 2000 protection area “Erzgebirgskamm am Großer Kranichsee”. Germany's protected area registration initiated by the Saxon state government for this area was accepted by the European Union Commission, making this area part of the EU's Natura 2000 network . The Erzgebirgskreis rates the 611 hectare nature reserve: "The high-quality biotope equipment and the species occurring here make this reserve a special gem in the ridge of the Ore Mountains.")

In the Natura 2000 site are eleven FFH habitat types present of which were classified as priority four under European law: species-rich Nardus grasslands , active raised bogs, mountain pine - bog woodland with bog pine stands and spruce bog forests.

It is a watershed and Krummholz high moor that is drained to the west by the Great Pyra , to the east by the Wilzsch and to the south by the Rolava . Siegfried Sieber emphasized the importance of this raised bog as a water reservoir with relevance for the groundwater level and the drinking water supply.

tourism

Already around 1900 the Erzgebirgszweigverein Carlsfeld dug a stick dam in the moor and erected a viewing scaffold that only existed for a few years. Outside of the areas designated as total reserves where entry is prohibited, interested parties can walk through the area on a stick embankment.
