biography

Sujew took part in FIS races for the first time in December 2003 , and a year later he achieved his first top 10 placement in a giant slalom in Absakowo . At the European Youth Olympic Festival 2005 he achieved twelfth place in the giant slalom and 21st place in the Super-G. After further top 10 results in FIS slaloms and giant slaloms, initially in his home country and from the 2006/2007 season also in often more crowded races in Central and Northern Europe, he made his first sporadic appearances in the European Cup , but mostly did not achieve it the goal. At the Universiade 2007 he was 31st in the Super-G, but failed in the slalom. In February 2007, Sujew took part in the qualifying race for the slalom of the 2007 World Cup in Åre , Sweden, along with three other Russians . With 14th place he qualified for the main competition, but retired like Anton Konovalov , who was able to qualify as the second Russian, in the first round. At the Junior World Championship in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee , which took place three weeks later , his best result was 20th place in the slalom. Next winter, Sujew achieved twelfth place in slalom at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Formigal and 18th place in giant slalom at the military ski world championship in Fieberbrunn as the best of the three Russian starters. At the end of the season he celebrated his first victory in an FIS race in the giant slalom of Polyarnyje Sori . Before that, he had already achieved first place in the Super Combined at the same time as Hannes Wagner at the 2008 German Championships in Sarntal / Reinswald in South Tyrol .

On October 26th, 2008 Sujew made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Sölden , but just like his next two World Cup starts in December in Val-d'Isère, he did not finish. While he was only rarely used in the World Cup at first, Sujew has been regularly at the start in the European Cup since winter 2008/09. In the beginning, however, he suffered a lot of failures, especially in slalom, and did not reach the points for the time being, i.e. placements among the fastest 30. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère, Sujew competed in four disciplines. His best result was 15th place in the slalom, but only 17 runners came into the ranking. In the super-G and giant slalom he just missed the top 30 and in the super combination he was eliminated in downhill skiing. Two weeks after the world championship, he achieved his first countable result in the world cup in the super combination of Sestriere . Sujew finished 44th out of 45 runners. In the 2009/10 season he was eliminated in his four World Cup races in the first run or could not qualify for the second run, in the European Cup he was only once among the top 40 this season. After Sujew already placed in the Russian Championships in 2008 three stood on the podium for the first time in giant slalom, he won the super combined of the Russian championships in 2009. In 2011 and 2012 he was again Russian champion in the super combined, he also won the downhill in 2010 and the giant slalom in 2011. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Sujew achieved 23rd place in the super combined, 36th place in the Super-G, 54th place in the downhill and 64th place in the giant slalom. Only in the slalom did he fail in the first round.

On November 28, 2010, Stepan Sujew won his first points in the European Cup with 19th place in the giant slalom in Trysil . Two months later, he finished ninth in the Méribel super combination for the first time in the top ten. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he finished 27th in the Super-G. In the slalom and giant slalom, he was eliminated in the first round. In the European Cup season 2011/2012 Sujew reached another three top 10 placements, while he remained in the World Cup without points. At the beginning of the 2012/2013 season he achieved his first podium places in the European Cup when he finished second and third in the two giant slaloms in Levi .
