action

During a global pandemic in the near future, young orphaned Stephanie is alone in a large and abandoned house with no one to care or care for her. Talking only to her cuddly toy , the turtle Francis and her brother Paul, who is lying dead in his bed, she feeds on preserved fruits and jam, when a shadowy and dark supernatural force seems to begin to pursue the child and try to get hold of him. When the parents unexpectedly return after a long time, they apologize for leaving Stephanie alone. They bury Paul's body in a tree and try to enable their daughter to lead a normal life. However, Stephanie's father Eric always has a gun in his belt and begins to erect a protective wall in front of the house to keep the "monster" away from the property. When Stephanie's mother Jane undresses in the morning, large scars become visible on her stomach in the form of rings that look like the tentacles of an octopus . Later that night, Paul's corpse is thrown back into his bed through the skylight, again causing great fear and emotional pain for the parents, but Stephanie seems completely unaffected by the incident. It turns out that the parents had fled before, because Stephanie's telekinesis , which occurs in the form of giant tentacles and Paul broke his neck because he annoyed her, had also attacked Stephanie's parents to "protect" the girl. It is also revealed that other children will be afflicted by some kind of disease and mutate into monsters with telekinetic powers.

The parents also reveal that they had to leave to look for a solution to the problem with the "monster" and that in truth there are no monsters, but Stephanie had been the "monster" all along. The shadowy figure was probably caused by Stephanie's fears and the resulting hallucinations . After another life-threatening incident with Stephanie, Jane drugged the girl and tried to perform a brain operation on the child to neutralize the child's immense powers. However, Stephanie wakes up before she can start operating, telekinetically destroys the laboratory and equipment, and easily injures the parents. In various news programs the apocalyptic events and the murderous, telekinetic behavior of children like Stephanie are revealed around the world and that there is no cure for their powers and the resulting murderous acts, so that the children affected must be killed in order to spread further prevent.

The next morning, Stephanie pretends nothing has happened. The parents, on the other hand, plan to murder their daughter by poisoning hot cocoa and filling it in a thermos bottle. When Eric leads the child over the small family's estate, he explains to the girl his theory that a demonic power would take hold of Stephanie and the other children during the rampage. In this state, Stephanie occasionally develops dark spots on her face, which adds further credibility to his theory. When Stephanie later starts to drink the cocoa, the drink is knocked out of her hand by her telekinetic powers. Then her eyes change, her face gets dark spots again and she attacks Eric. She tells him that he should have killed her when he had the chance. Eric struggles, however, draws his gun and shoots Stephanie, who obviously dies and remains on the ground. He then returns to the house to get a shovel and the parents begin to cry and mourn for their daughter. However, Stephanie returns to the house a little later unharmed, as her telekinetic powers seem to have stopped the bullets and knocked them down before they could injure the girl. Stephanie now makes her way inside the house and begins to torture and kill her parents. Meanwhile, Stephanie tells her father that they should have stayed away and not come back. After the death of her parents, she picks up her stuffed turtle, telekinetically destroys the house and pulls the corpses outside to bring them to Paul's grave on the tree. When she arrives at other houses in the neighborhood, she drops the plush toy and steps over it, as she now seems to have finally and completely succumbed to the demonic power and begins to destroy all the other houses. As she does this, her shadow has long tentacles, although her telekinetic arms are invisible even to other people.

The film ends with a zoom away from the earth beginning to show that fires are spreading around the world, so that the other telekinetic children seem to behave in a similar way and in many places cause the same destruction and destruction as Stephanie.

publication

Stephanie was presented to the world for the first time on April 27, 2017 as the opening film at The Overlook Film Festival in the Timberline Lodge Mountain Hotel. However, Universal Pictures did not release the film in German cinemas, but on August 23, 2018 directly on Blu-ray and DVD as well as video-on-demand . For the release in the home theater market, Stephanie was shortened by around 3 minutes to 86 minutes compared to the 89-minute cut version of The Overlook Film Festival . There was an introductory prologue that shows that Stephanie should be set in a futuristic America of the year 2027 and scenes in a military base fell victim to the scissors. As a result of the cuts, the entire supporting cast was almost completely cut out and with a few exceptions the three main actors remained.

Reviews

Lutz Granert from Filmstarts.de awards 3.0 out of 5 stars and sums up that Akiva Goldsman's horror thriller convinces with a few original ideas and an ominous atmosphere, but the plot has some hangers. Ultimately, he draws the conclusion:

"Stephanie - The Evil In Her" is an atmospherically dense horror thriller with an impressive young leading actress, but only partially does justice to its narrative ambitions. "

Marcel Demuth from Filmchecker awards 7 out of 10 points and draws the conclusion:

“STEPHANIE - THE EVIL IN HER is a little insider tip that was produced by JASON BLUM, who is known to have a good feel for lucrative horror substances. Surprisingly, however, the film takes other, unconventional paths like most of the shockers from the producer's make-up called financiers and amazes with an unexpected twist that you probably won't see coming. Obviously one of the reasons why STEPHANIE (the original title) was released in this country without any detours directly for the home cinema market. The plot is in the beginning quite confused to lure the viewer on the wrong track. A clever move and the real quintessence of this horror film, which by the way is carried by a talented young actress. At just 13 years old, SHREE CROOKS, who was born in 2005, leads the viewer through the entire film, sometimes on their own. Even long-established actors often fail to do that. One has to praise that at this point. "
