Steve Thornton (born March 8, 1973 in Gloucester , Ontario ) is a former Canadian - British ice hockey player ( winger ) and coach who played for the Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League from 1991 to 2010, among others .

Career

Steve Thornton began his career as an ice hockey player at Boston University , which he attended from 1991 to 1995 and for whose ice hockey team he also participated in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations. In 1994 and 1995 he won the Hockey East championship with his university team and in 1995 the NCAA final tournament. The left shooter then moved to the Peoria Rivermen in the International Hockey League , which he left for Europe in the same season.

Thornton spent the rest of the season at Klagenfurt AC in the Austrian Bundesliga ; then he moved to the Adler Mannheim in the German ice hockey league . The Canadian also left the Adler during the current season, this time he was transferred to the British Ice Hockey Superleague , whose championship he won in 1999 with the Cardiff Devils. Thornton, who obtained British citizenship while in Great Britain, played for the Devils for almost five years and then moved to the London Knights . In 2003 he won the British championship again with the Belfast Giants .

For the 2003/04 season Thornton signed a contract with the Italian first division club HC Pustertal , for which he was on the ice for two years. After two more seasons in the Swiss National League A at HC Servette Genève and EHC Basel , the striker moved to Södertälje SK from HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division, for the 2006/07 season . With Södertälje he immediately rose to the Elitserien . After an engagement with Basingstoke Bison in the Elite Ice Hockey League , Thornton signed a contract with league competitor Belfast Giants for the 2008/09 season , with whom he won the EIHL Challenge Cup and the EIHL Knock Out Cup in 2009. In the 2009/10 season he won the EIHL playoff championship with his ex-club Belfast Giants. He then ended his active career at the age of 37. After he was already assistant coach during his time at Basington, he was employed by the Giants as a player coach.

International

For the British national ice hockey team , Thornton took part in the B World Championships in 1999 , 2001 , 2003 and 2004 . Especially at the World Cup in Division I in 2003, he was able to convince as the top scorer and best assists in Group B.
