The Substance is a pub with a cabaret in the Isarvorstadt district of Munich , which has its origins in the indie scene.

Foundation and naming

The restaurant was founded on March 10, 1990 in a former economy with an annex by the current business owner Jürgen Franke , at that time together with his fellow student Frank Bergmeyer , with whom he had previously organized unofficial punk parties in Munich. According to Frankes, they were inspired by the former Circus Gammelsdorf , an old cinema in Gammelsdorf that was known as a live club in the 1970s and 1980s because of the concerts of well-known performers in the Upper Bavarian indie scene.

The ambiguous name is made up of sub- and dance and stems from the fact that the public in the dance hall, especially in the early years, tended to belong to the youthful subcultures . On the occasion of an unofficial opening ceremony, the bar got its first headline from the local press: "Illegal punk bar opened opposite the KVR ".

Events

Elvis Party 2005

In addition to the regular dance events, the existing stage is the venue for live concerts by regional, but also internationally known independent scene bands and musicians. On March 12, 1990, shortly after the opening, Screaming Trees played here , later, for example, Urge Overkill , Therapy? , The Jesus Lizard , Wilco , Monster Magnet , The Charlatans , Sportfreunde Stiller and Tonair . Also Ben Becker or cabaret artist Martina Schwarzmann occurred in the substance. Since the opening, over 700 bands have given concerts in substance. Due to noise protection, concerts must end by 10 p.m. at the latest.

In addition to the bars and pubs, there are regular author readings , poetry slams , comedy nights, film screenings , football broadcasts and themed parties.

The substance is also a co-organizer and a venue for the Munich crime festival . In the summer months, the substance accompanies the “ Open-Air-Kino im Viehhof ” event at the slaughterhouse with an open-air stage. The after-Wiesn parties during the Oktoberfest days are considered the oldest event of this kind in Munich.

Munichslam

In 1994 the journalist Karl Bruckmaier carried out a literary slam for the first time in substance as a compromise between conventional reading and slam, in which the winners were determined by a jury .

In 1996, the Slam Masters Ko Bylanzky and Rayl Patzak took over the organization and moderation. Since then, the “Munichslam” has been taking place in the pub every second Sunday of the month. For a long time it was Europe's largest, regular poetry slam event. The monthly winners are chosen by the audience.

Jaromir Konecny and Bumillo are among the successful interpreters of the competition who started their careers as slam pots here . In 1999 the book Kaltland Beat was published by SubVers-Verlag . New German scene. Texts from the substance ( ISBN 3-933545-07-2 ), edited by Boris Kerenski and Sergiu Ştefănescu.

The English Comedy Club

Since September 5, 2004, Dagmar Brocksema has been organizing the “English Comedy Club” (ECC) in the pub, an English-language comedy event series with well-known British and American comedians . The individual events usually take place on the first Sunday and Monday of the month. Brocksema, who was born in Hamburg, was inspired to found the ECC by the Brixton Comedy Club , one of her favorite clubs during her six-year stay in England before she returned to Munich.

Substance FM

In order to offer DJs and bands a larger platform in addition to music events, the restaurant operates the Internet radio stationstoff FM .

Quotes

"The Substance was the first pub I went to because of the culture and not to raise my awareness with beer."
