The Sukma district ( Hindi : सुकमा जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

The administrative center is Sukma . Until 2012, the area belonged to the Dantewada district . The Sukma district is predominantly populated by Adivasi .

geography

The Sukma district is located in the extreme south of Chhattisgarh on the border with the neighboring states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh . Neighboring districts are Bijapur in the west, Dantewada in the northwest, Bastar in the northeast (all Chhattisgarh), Malkangiri (Odisha) in the east and Khammam (Andhra Pradesh) in the south.

The area of ​​the Sukma district is 5,636 square kilometers. It is divided into the three Tehsils Konta, Sukma and Chhindgarh. The landscape is hilly, a large part of the district area is densely forested and inaccessible. The Sabari River , a tributary of the Godavari , flows through the Sukma district and in parts forms the border with Odisha.

history

The area of ​​today's Sukma district belonged to the princely state of Bastar during the British colonial period . After Indian independence in 1947, the former princely state became the Bastar district of the Central Provinces , from which the state of Madhya Pradesh emerged in 1956 . In 1998 the Sukma area became part of the newly established Dantewada District . In 2000, it became part of Chhattisgarh State , which was formed from the eastern part of Madhya Pradesh. As an independent district, the Sukma district was separated from the Dantewada district in 2012.

The Sukma district is one of the districts hardest hit by the uprising of the Maoist rebels ( Naxalites ). A large part of the district area is in fact under the control of the Maoists. In April 2010, the Naxalites attacked a military convoy near the village of Tarmetla in what is now the Sukma district in one of the most violent attacks since the beginning of the uprising, killing 75 soldiers. In April 2012, Sukma's district leader ( collector ), Alex Paul Menon, was kidnapped by Maoists and held hostage for 13 days.

The Sukma district is sparsely populated. Based on the results of the 2001 census, the district has 249,841 inhabitants. This corresponds to a population density of 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The majority of the inhabitants of the Dantewada district belong to the indigenous population ( Adivasi ): Around 70.5 percent of the population are counted as members of the tribal population ( scheduled tribes ). The largest group are the Gond , a smaller minority are the Halba .
