The 1986 Supercup was held for the first time in the newly founded Supercup championship. The first run took place on April 27, 1986 at the Nürburgring and the season finale on September 21 also took place there. A total of four races were held in Germany during the season.

Overall winner was Porsche works driver Hans-Joachim Stuck in a Porsche 962 C with 34 points. The Blaupunkt Joest Racing Team won the drivers' championship.

Class C1 and C2 racing cars started in the ADAC Sport Auto Supercup. The C1 racing cars were mostly used by works teams and large private teams. The smaller teams use the cheaper C2 racing cars.

Originally, five races were planned for the championship. The start of the season and the final race were at the Nürburgring and one race each was planned for the AVUS , the Hockenheimring and the Norisring . However, the race originally planned for May 11th on the AVUS was canceled, so that only four championship races took place.

Hans-Joachim Stuck, who started as a works driver with a Porsche 962 C for Porsche and won two races, dominated the qualification runs and the championship runs. Only Klaus Ludwig , who competed for Team Joest Racing with a Porsche 956B , was able to keep up and win the race at the Norisring . The last race of the season at the Nürburgring was won by Eddie Cheever for the Jaguar works team, ahead of Stuck, who came second, and Ludwig.
