The Svratka , formerly Švarcava ( German Schwarza , Schwarzach , also Schwarzawa ) is a left tributary of the Thaya .
course
It rises in the Stříbrná studánka northeast of Cikháj in Moravia on the Žákova hora mountain in the Žďárské vrchy . The second source has its source at the Blatky forester's lodge, this tributary is also known as Břimovka. Between the Otrok mountain near Herálec and the confluence of the Trhonický potok below Jimramov , the course of the Svratka formed the historical border between Bohemia and Moravia . It flows through Brno, where the Brno Dam ( Brněnská přehrada ) was built between 1936 and 1940 . In the Thaya it flows into the Nové Mlýny (Neumühl) dam near Ivaň .
The largest tributaries are at Ivaň the Jihlava and Svitava (Eng. Zwitta), which flows into Přízřenice on the southern outskirts of Brno .
The name probably comes from the old Bohemian word sworti ("to wind up"). In the recent past it was also called Schwarzawa / Švarcava . Many neighbors (especially in the Brno area) still call Svratka Piava today. This commemorates the participant and victim of the Piave battle (northern Italy) in World War I, in which many Moravian soldiers died in the service of the Austro-Hungarian army .
