history

Jews were already resident in Bergheim in the 14th century and they had various synagogue buildings over the years.

Today's synagogue in Bergheim was built between 1860 and 1863 on the site of a previous building. During the Nazi era , the synagogue was robbed and devastated. After 1945 there were no more church services . In the 1990s, the former synagogue was renovated by the secular community and it is now used for cultural events.

architecture

The synagogue, built according to plans by the architect Auguste Hartmann , has arched windows that are framed with colored sandstone . There is a triple arched window above the portal and a large circular window above it, which is adorned by a semi-arch risalit made of red sandstone. The tablets of the law are enthroned on the gable .

A plaque in memory of the Jewish community was attached to the former synagogue .
