Systematics of dragonflies
The following system of dragonflies shows the dragonfly species in Europe (without subspecies) and all families occurring worldwide, classified in the system of dragonflies (Odonata). The list may still be incomplete for species that reach Europe in the extreme east and southeast - also depending on the course of the Inner Eurasian border between the Caspian and Black Seas. Some species that occur on the north side of the Caucasus are missing from the list presented . The species rank and genus of some taxa are also controversial . In the case of species that are indigenous to large parts of Europe - especially in Central Europe - there is no reference to distribution; for the other species, the European area is specified more precisely.
The German names are based on the suggestions of Wendler et al. (1995). For the few species not listed there, meaningful new creations were awarded. In some cases, an older German name that is still in use is also given.
In the case of the superfamilies and the families that have no representatives in Europe, a German name was dispensed with. The subfamilies are missing in this illustration, but can be found in the respective family articles.
