Tank Girl is an American science fiction - action film by Rachel Talalay from the year 1995 . The plot is based on the cartoon series Tank Girl . The film opened in German cinemas on June 22, 1995. On September 10, 2019, it was announced that actress Margot Robbie and her production company LuckyChap Entertainment had secured the rights for a remake.

The world is a great desert in 2033 after a major meteor strike . The water resources are from the group Water and Power controls under the direction of Kesslee. Kesslee's soldiers raid the settlement where Rebecca lives. Only she and the little girl Sam survive. They are captured and taken to Kesslee, who demands that Rebecca work for him. When she refuses the offer, she is sent to a labor camp.

While doing forced labor, Rebecca meets a technician who, although she maintains the aircraft and vehicles from Water and Power, also appears to be a forced laborer. Rebecca tries to persuade her to flee, but needs several attempts. Eventually, the two of them escape by stealing a battle tank and one of the aircraft.

The women run into the Rippers, a group of kangaroo people . They all come from a military experiment which, according to the Rippers, had the goal of creating the perfect soldiers. The Rippers want to kill the women first, but some find them too attractive to do so. In order to prove that they are not spies of the Water and Power, Jet Girl , as the pilot now calls herself, and Rebecca are tasked with spying on a group of weapons transport and obtaining photos of the delivery for the Rippers. The two succeed in this too.

The Rippers and the women are now waging a guerrilla war against the troops of Water and Power . Kesslee, who still has the girl Sam in his hands, holed up in the headquarters of the company, so that Tank Girl decides to attack this in order to free the girl.

However, this turns out to be a trap in which Kesslee intends to neutralize the Rippers, the only remaining threat to Water and Power . From Rebecca's outbreak and the theft of the vehicles, all events followed the CEO's plan, which he also reveals with relish to Tank Girl during the fight at the headquarters. However, thanks to the tank and the superior martial arts of the Rippers, Kesslee is defeated and Sam is saved.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was not art, but "it sure is fun". The film “go to extremes”, nothing is sacred to him. The spontaneity and lack of seriousness would make the film so successful.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 31, 1995 that the film was not lacking in ambition. He used numerous "tricks" of the art of film to create a multimedia version of the comic booklet. He relies on the technical effects, which, however, has a "fatiguing" effect on the viewer.

The film was shot in Arizona , California and New Mexico . Its production amounted to an estimated 25 million US dollars . It grossed $ 4.06 million in United States cinemas; worldwide it was a total of about 6.6 million US dollars.
