history

Church with a listed lower part of the steeple

The first traces of settlement were a Roman logging camp around 200 to 300 AD. Today's place was founded around 1400 (Eytscheit). Around 1668 the first church was built, which was supplied by the Reichenstein monastery with pastors. In 1924 it was demolished because it was in disrepair. In 1933, today's parish church of St. Lucia was built as a hall church. The listed lower part of the church tower was taken over from the old church.

Until the end of 1971 Eicherscheid belonged as an independent municipality to the dissolved district of Monschau and this to the also dissolved administrative district of Aachen (see Aachen Law ). On January 1, 1972, the former community was incorporated into Simmerath. A small area was reclassified to Monschau.

From 1961 to 1971 the postal code was 5109 Eicherscheid / via Monschau (Rheinl.) , From 1972 to 1993 5107 Simmerath and since 1993 52152 Simmerath .

With a lot of luck she survived in Belgium and emigrated to the USA after the war. The Kaufmann family were the only Jews in the entire Altkreis Monschau .

politics

coat of arms

The coat of arms was created in 1961 (State Archives No. 1814-WI - Str. From June 6, 1961): coat of arms shield in gold, a black oak with four acorns, on the left, as seen from the viewer, two upright wooden girdles in black and on the right a hammer with the round handle turned down, also in black.

The two kummet woods indicate the craft of the wood saddlers who made kummets for the farm; the hammer symbolizes the hammer mill in Hammer , which was founded in 1463 by Hermann Hammerscheid in the Rur valley. The black oak is the symbol of the forest wealth of the former municipality and the charcoal trade . The oak separates the symbols Kummethölzer and Hammer to indicate that the watershed of the Rur and Kall tributaries is located between Hammer and Eicherscheid .
