The Tapacocha district is located in the Recuay province in the Ancash region in southwest Peru . The district was established on March 5, 1936. It has an area of ​​78.2 km². The 2017 census counted 448 residents. In 1993 the population was 661, in 2007 it was 525. The administrative seat of the district is the 3608  m high town of Tapacocha with 301 inhabitants (as of 2017). Tapacocha is located 35 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Recuay .

Geographical location

The Tapacocha district is located in the west of the Recuay province. It is located on the western flank of the Cordillera Negra . The watershed of the mountains runs along the northeastern district boundary. The Río Cotaparaco, a tributary of the Río Huarmey , flows west along the northwestern district boundary . The southeast of the district is drained over the Río Huayllapampa south to the Río Fortaleza .

The Tapacocha district borders in the far west on the Pararín district , in the north on the Cotaparaco district , in the far northeast on the Cátac district , in the southeast on the Huayllapampa district and in the southwest on the Llacllín district .
