action

Dawn O'Keefe, a teenager, is the spokesperson for the Christian organization Promise , which promotes sexual abstinence . One day, during a meeting, Dawn gave a well-received speech about the Purity Ring that all members must wear. After that she meets the member Tobey, to whom she feels attracted. From then on, the two often go out with Dawn's friends Alisha and Phil. Dawn is already fantasizing about a possible marriage with Tobey, although he admits that he also feels something for her, they both come to the conclusion that they shouldn't spend more time together. However, they fail to do this, which is why they meet at a river a few days later. After swimming, they go to a cave to warm up, where they kiss. Dawn feels uncomfortable and wants to go out again, but Tobey becomes increasingly aggressive, which is why Dawn panics and tries to push him away. Tobey starts hitting her on the floor, banging her head. Tobey takes advantage of her daze and begins to rape her , but suddenly his penis is bitten off from her vagina . Meanwhile, Dawn comes to and looks shocked to leave.

Dawn first tries to forget what she has experienced and goes back to Promise meetings. After meeting up, she sees her classmate Ryan at a dance event. The two start a conversation, Dawn is brought home by him. Shortly thereafter, Dawn goes back to the river to look for Tobey, where she only finds a freshwater crab eating Tobey's severed penis. Dawn takes off her purity ring and throws it into the water. At home she does research and fears that she has a dentate vagina . That's why she goes to the gynecologist Dr. Godfrey to investigate. However, he begins to sexually abuse her during treatment by penetrating her without a glove , which is why he loses four fingers through her vagina, which he has to have the surgeon sutured again. Dawn then wants to go home on her bike, but sees a policeman driving Tobey's car and several patrol cars following him. She goes to the river again, where Tobey's body is being retrieved from the water. When Dawn arrives at home broken up, she learns that her sick mother Kim is in the hospital. She had collapsed at home, what Dawn doesn't know is that her stepbrother Brad and his friend Melanie noticed this, but Brad urged Melanie not to help her because he didn't want to interrupt their intercourse.

Dawn hysterically visits Ryan. He gives her a glass of champagne with a sedative and begins to satisfy her with a vibrator , which eventually leads to sexual intercourse. Dawn is initially afraid of hurting him too, but notices that her vagina won't bite if she's relaxed and the sex is consensual. The next morning, the two of them sleep together again when a friend of Ryan calls him. Ryan smugly claims during the conversation that his sex with Dawn is the subject of a wager between him and the boyfriend. Dawn gets angry because of this, and her vagina rips off Ryan's penis. Dawn leaves him bleeding profusely in bed and tells him to call his mother for help. He survives and is taken to the hospital, where his penis is sewn back on. When Dawn arrives home, she learns that her mother has died in the clinic. Her stepfather Bill wants to throw Brad out because of this, but he lets go of his American Pit Bull Terrier on his father and Dawn confesses his love. Dawn drives to her stepfather in the hospital, Melanie is also at his sick bed. When she sees Bill's serious injuries and learns from Melanie that Brad deliberately ignored her mother's calls for help in order to have undisturbed sex, she is out for revenge.

Dawn puts on sexy make-up at home and seduces Brad. While they are having sex, he casually notes that he was bitten on the finger while playing doctor games as a kid . When he realizes that it wasn't Dawn's mouth, his penis is bitten off from her vagina. His genitals fall out of her vagina to the floor, where it is eaten by his dog. This spits out the glans because there is a piercing on it. Dawn leaves and lets Brad bleed to death. She drives away on her bike when she gets a flat tire and has to hitchhike . She is taken away by an older man and falls asleep. When she wakes up, it is already night and the car is at a gas station . When she tries to get out, the man locks the doors several times. He indicates with a gesture that she should have sex with him so that he can let her out. Dawn hesitates briefly and looks satisfied into the camera in the last shot , then she smiles seductively at the driver.

Mark Kermode claimed in The Guardian that in the 1980s the British Censorship Department probably went about the "deliciously unconventional, tough horror comedy" with "secateurs". The dentate vagina alone would have given director James Ferman "palpitations". However, this is different today. The film is a satirical attack on the chaste vows of conservative American youth. The director Mitchell Lichtenstein reminds us that the gore genre has always been about more than meat and two veg (British term for male genitals). The leading actress Jess Weixler hits the right balance between naivety and malice. Kermode closed his criticism by saying that while Teeth had a “proto-feminist” agenda, all fans of the “creaky body horror of the time” would be delighted with the film's “funny and nauseating” bad taste.

Awards and nominations

Jess Weixler received the Special Jury Prize for Dramatic Performance at the Sundance Film Festival for her performance (together with Tamara Podemski for the production Four Sheets to the Wind ) . In addition, the film itself was nominated for the jury's grand prize. Weixler was nominated for a Gotham Award in the Best Newcomer category that same year .
