Freienstein-Teufen (officially Freienstein until 1958 ) is a political municipality in the Bülach district of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

Freienstein-Teufen is located between Irchel and Dattenberg in the lower Töss Valley on the right side of the Töss . It consists of the villages of Freienstein and Teufen and borders the Rhine at Tössegg . Rorbas is on the left bank of the river . The two communities are connected to each other by a modern road bridge and an old arch bridge.

The political community is 8.32 km², of which 50% are forest, 40% agriculture, 6% settlements and 4% traffic / road.

Surname

The name Freienstein is derived from Freienstein Castle .

Before 1800 the community was called Rorbas am Freienstein or Rorbas ennet der Töss .

On December 31, 2011, 49.3% of the population belonged to the Evangelical Reformed Church and 21.9% to the Roman Catholic Church .

The Evangelical Reformed Church and the Chrischona congregation are linked in the Rorbas-Freienstein section of the Evangelical Alliance .

The mayor is the non-party Oliver Müller (as of December 2017).

In many areas Freienstein-Teufen organizes itself with the neighboring community of Rorbas , for example with the school and church community. The post office also operates only one post office for the closely-knit villages of Freienstein and Rorbas. Until July 29, 2006 the town of Teufen had its own post office with the postcode 8428.

economy

Viticulture is an important branch of the economy . Freienstein-Teufen is the second largest vineyard community in the canton after Stäfa .
