Tha Doggfather is the second studio album by American rapper Snoop Dogg . It was released on November 12, 1996 on the Death Row Records label and ranked # 1 on the Billboard 200 .
production
Snoop Dogg was arrested in August 1993 and charged with complicity in murder; in February 1996 the charges were dropped. The lawsuit meant that the album release and a tour for his first album Doggystyle had to be postponed.
Tha Doggfather , unlike Doggystyle, was not developed by Dr. Dre produces because he had left Death Row Records several months earlier during a dispute . This work was done by Daz Dillinger from Tha Dogg Pound , with whom Snoop Dogg has been friends since school. The album was recorded at Death Row Records studios in Long Beach and mastered and mixed by DJ Pooh . Tupac Shakur , a friend of the artist, died two weeks before the album was released . The production of the album was stopped for a short time because he wanted to immortalize Shakur in the booklet.
Cover design
The cover is mostly black. The focus is on the rapper's head, while Tha Doggfather is on the top left and Snoop Doggy Dogg in white under the rapper's face . As with the predecessor, the cover was designed by Joe Cool, who, according to his own statements, wanted to emphasize the seriousness with the black tones, in contrast to the rather self-ironic predecessor. The album title is an allusion to the film The Godfather and the novel of the same name by Mario Puzo , which are called The Godfather in English . It is also an allusion to the rapper's stage name.
Texts
The lyrics on Tha Doggfather are very different from those on his debut album Doggystyle . While the lyrics on the first album were rather aggressive, contained many insults and mostly dealt with drugs , sex and violence , Snoop Dogg reduced the number of swear words on Tha Doggfather and told about a positive life and avoiding violence in songs such as Doggyland . Snoop Dogg said in an interview that he wanted to be a better role model for children. In addition, he tries to present a better image and to avoid trouble with the media and women's rights associations. Snoop Dogg also used the album to reveal personal things. He explains that he has been a member of the Crips for years , that he used to have a bad relationship with his father and that he was expelled from high school for drug trafficking.
Sound
The sound of the album is also very different from its predecessor. The album almost completely dispenses with G-Funk , which runs through the album in doggy style . Sometimes Snoop Dog also used styles of music like funk for songs like Snoop Bounce or hardcore rap for (OG) Wake Up . The album uses several samples of different songs by other artists such as B. The Love You Save by the Jackson 5 on Doggyland or The Show by Slick Rick on Sixx Minutes .

As singles were Snoop's Upside Ya Head , Vapors and Doggfather extracted, all of which were internationally successful. Snoop's Upside Ya Head , for example, reached the top 10 in the Australian singles charts. In addition, the single was voted number 1 in the American Hot Rap Singles several times . A big part of the success is the hookline , which uses a sample from Oops Upside Ya Head from The GAP Band . The second single Vapors also reached the top of the American rap charts. The album reached the UK Top 40 of the charts. Snoop's Upside Ya Head went three times platinum while Vapors went double platinum and Doggfather gold.
Success and criticism

In total, the album sold over 10 million times and was awarded a diamond. The Rolling Stone rated the album just average and awarded 2½ out of 5 stars.
Subsequent works
Snoop Dogg often referred to the title of his second album in later works. For example, he played the presenter in the porn film Snoop Dogg's Hustlaz: Diary of a Pimp , who is addressed in the film as Doggfather . In addition, Snoop Dogg called himself Doggfather in his later songs and videos .
