Doggystyle is the debut album by US gangsta rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg . It was released on November 23, 1993 on the US label Death Row Records . The album was ranked number one on the Billboard 200 and Rolling Stone ranks it number 14 on their “100 Best Albums of the 1990s”.

The album title is a play on words from the artist name "Snoop Doggy Dogg" and a sex position , known in German as the doggy position . The album is part of the early G-Funk and West Coast hip-hop of the rap scene, which was getting stronger at the time, and was the breakthrough for rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg, who later changed his stage name to Snoop Dogg, as the naming rights for "Snoop Doggy Dogg" were with Death Row Records lie.

background

Snoop Dogg, 2006

Ex- NWA member Dr. Dre , on whose album The Chronic Snoop Dogg had several guest appearances a year earlier. Since Dre was in an argument with his former colleague Eazy-E at the time , there are several swipes against him on the album. During the promotional phase of the album, Snoop Dogg had to answer in court for accessory to murder. The charges were dropped in 1996 due to a lack of evidence, which, in addition to a planned tour, delayed the album production on his follow-up album Tha Doggfather .

production

The album was recorded in early 1993 at the Death Row Records Studios in Long Beach . The two hip-hop groups 213 and Tha Dogg Pound were selected as features . 213 recorded the track Ain't no Fun , which was actually planned for the debut album Nate Doggs . With Tha Dogg Pound, Snoop Doggy Dogg recorded the tracks Serial Killa , For All My Niggaz and My Bitches and the single Doggy Dogg World . The former also contained a feature from RBX , while the latter was created in collaboration with The Lady of Rage . The Lady of Rage on G-Funk Intro and Mr. Malik aka Lil 'Hershey Loc on Pump Pump have other features . The album was created within a year and is characterized by mostly slow, bass-heavy music similar to that of Dr. Dre introduced the G-Funk genre. An exception is z. B. the song Gz and Hustlaz , which has 100 bpm .

Texts

The lyrics of the album were criticized by youth protection associations, especially since Snoop Dogg describes his lyrics as partially real, such as the line chill and feel the motherfucking realism . The lyrics mostly deal with the life of a gangster, drugs and sex. Exceptions are tracks like Murder Was the Case , which deals with Snoop Dogg's conviction.

The album is characterized above all by Snoop Dogg's rhyme technique and structure as well as his flow . Stephen Erlewine from Allmusic described Snoop Dogg as one of the best language acrobats in hip-hop and praised his multiple rhymes and rhyme structures, which otherwise only Nas could do. Christopher John Farley of the New York Times praised Snoop Dogg's easy-going flow, which perfectly matches the slow, bass-heavy beats of Dr. Dre adapt, as well as his skillful change between calm and aggressive voice register.

influence

Hip hop culture

Critics suggested that Snoop Dogg's lyrics on violence, sex, and misogyny, and his claims that the lyrics were real, would exacerbate many social problems in problematic areas of the United States. The designation of women as bitches or hoes is said to have a negative impact on the perception of American men towards women. In addition, Snoop Dogg and other hip-hop artists like Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Tupac Shakur etc. take their gangster image too lightly and present the use of weapons too naturally. In response to the discussion, Mariah Carey covered the song Ain't no Fun , which was portrayed as one of the main examples of misogynist music.

Subsequent works

Snoop Dogg referred to his debut album in many other projects, for example he called his label Doggystyle Records and released songs like Who Am I (Whats my Name?) Part 2 or Gin and Juice 2 on subsequent albums . In addition, Snoop Dogg made a porn film called Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle , in which several songs from the album were used.
