The Grand is an American comedy film from the year 2007 . Directed by Zak Penn , who also wrote the script with Matt Bierman . The German-language DVD version was published under the title Loooser - How to win and lose a Casino .

action

The international poker game Grand Championship of Poker takes place in a hotel in Las Vegas . One of the participants is Jack Faro, a grandson of a late casino owner who is considered a womanizer. Faro hopes winning the tournament will allow him to prevent an investor from taking over the property. Seth Schwartzman is accompanied by his daughter Lainie and his son Larry - whom he often criticizes.

Other participants are the amateur Andy Andrews, who knows little about the game of poker, but is very successful through luck alone, and "the German", whose real name nobody knows and who motivates himself by killing smaller animals. In addition to Faro, favorites include professional poker players Larry Schwartzman and Harold Melvin, who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and whose life is dominated by his mother.

"The German" is the first to be eliminated when he can be proven to have attempted fraud. Lainie Schwartzman finally reaches the final and can defeat Jack Faro there. Lanie uses her winnings to invest in Faros Casino.

Reviews

Ronnie Scheib wrote in Variety magazine on May 14, 2007 that the improvised film was reminiscent of the World Series of Poker program . He is conventional; his humor is close to that of the skits on television and does not cause spontaneous laughter. The characters are drawn in caricatures.
