The Last Kingdom is a 2015 British series based on the novel series The Uhtred Saga ( The Saxon Stories ) by Bernard Cornwell . It is about the fictional person Uhtred, an Anglo-Saxon Ealdorman in England in the 9th century AD. The series created by Stephen Butchard was produced by BBC America and had its series start there on October 10, 2015. In the UK , the series started on October 22, 2015 on BBC Two . On December 29, 2015, the first season of the series was released on Netflix Germany via streaming . A second season with new episodes was commissioned at the end of 2015 and started on March 16, 2017 with the original broadcast. The German-language first broadcast of the second season took place on May 29, 2017 on Netflix. On November 19, 2018, the third season started on Netflix. On December 21, 2018, it was announced that a fourth season would be produced, which would launch on Netflix on April 26, 2020. On July 7, 2020, the series was extended for a fifth season.

In the second half of the 9th century, Vikings invade the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England. Uhtred is kidnapped by Vikings as a child and grows up as one of them. As a young adult, however, his foster father Ragnar is betrayed and murdered by his own people. Uhtred can escape. He claims his right to be Ealdorman von Bebbanburg . For this he joins Alfred , the King of Wessex , whereby both are concerned about their own advantage. On November 9, 2018, Sony Classical released an album with selected pieces of music written for the series by John Lunn and Eivør for download. A CD will follow on November 23, 2018. The soundtrack entered the UK's album soundtrack chart at number 39 on November 16, 2018.

In the Internet Movie Database by April 2020, more than 62,700 people who voted gave the series an overall average grade of 8.4 / 10. The episodes of the first season received an average of 8.7 / 10, the episodes of the second season an 8.8 / 10 and the episodes of the third and fourth seasons each received a 9.2 / 10.
