The Longest Journey is an adventure game by the Norwegian game designer Ragnar Tørnquist . It was developed by the studio and publisher Funcom and appeared in Norway in 1999 and in other countries such as Germany , Great Britain and the USA the following year .

action

In the world of the year 2209 the player slips into the role of the young April Ryan. She has just moved to Newport, a (fictional) city on the west coast of North America, to begin studying art there. In the preparation time for April's entrance exam, events come thick and fast when it turns out that her dreams and her perception of reality threaten to merge. Experiences from the dream world manifest themselves in reality with increasing frequency and scope and make waves in April's environment. Guided by the eccentric-looking, aging Latino Cortez, April learns about the cause of the fluctuations, embarks on a journey through worlds believed to be forgotten and slowly becomes aware of her own personality and her role in the cosmos.

Gameplay

In The Longest Journey is a classic point-and-click adventure game that is played completely with the mouse. The interaction possibilities are reduced to three verbs for viewing, speaking and using, whereby often only one action is possible, which is then carried out automatically.

technology

In contrast to other adventure games, which were mainly created in the 1990s, the characters and locations in The Longest Journey were not depicted as comic characters, but as naturalistic render characters, which, however, were still subject to certain technical restrictions. The game characters act as 3D objects in front of sparingly animated, rendered 3D backgrounds with fixed camera positions. Comparable contemporary games of this type, such as Grim Fandango or Escape from Monkey Island , had, although they use a similar technology, a pure keyboard or joypad control.

The game was released for Windows . Originally the operating system versions Windows 95, 98 and ME were supported, unofficially also Windows NT, 2000 and XP. With the upcoming release of Dreamfall , a "Special Edition" was released, which officially supports Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP and is delivered as DVD-ROM.

Dreamfall Chapters

The computer game Dreamfall Chapters is the successor to Dreamfall . It appeared between October 2014 and June 2016 in five episodes, the so-called books , which were published every few months.

Dreamfall Chapters marks the end of the Dreamer cycle , a series that began with Dreamfall . Further sequels to the overarching The Longest Journey series are not excluded.
